Oh yeah, all things considered, East Germany could have been a lot fucking worse. While they did get some Soviet assistance (Nothing even approaching the money the US gave West Germany through the Marshall plan), the relative success of the GDR was from the strength of its people.
Everyone realized they came out a devastating war and the surviving leaders, intellectuals, and skilled workers banded together.
Also considering the reforms that were occurring in the 80s and were slated to continue into the 90s, conditions and the economy could have improved further.
