They tried to do a warfare with the least damage to Europe, because it was going to be occupied by them, hence the blitzkrieg was perfect at the beginning. Smart to avoid a direct invasion of militarized eastern prussia, the soviets planned on taking over the occupied region of eastern Poland in order to establish a point at which they can invade with two large forces to the important major port cities of gdansk and koszalin. This would cut off the rest of prussia from the nazis, where I would assume much of Hitler's eastern forces would be stationed. Such an attack could be really devestating if successful.
However, why invade Romania? Perhaps the soviets want more control of the black sea, linking them to the Mediterranean?

First there was the Haavara Agreement.
They were asked to leave at first and the vast majority did.
Then they were forced to leave.
Then, when war efforts got intense, the remaining jews and degenerates were put into work camps.
The only camps still reported as death camps were camps not inspected by allied forces, but claimed by the Soviet Union.
As for Nazi's being peaceful. No, not really. They were fucked over hard after WWI, even though they never really lost that war. Their leaders forced a surrender during a stalemate. Germans were pissed as fuck. That's another discussion though. Germans were also being abused by Poles after WWI. It was literally the main reason for Hitler's invasion into Poland.
