Net Neutrality doesn't exist and never has. If ISP's wanted to do things like "throttle or remove 4chan", and other dumb shit like that - then they can, as there is literally nothing stopping them from doing so. You know who does that kind of thing with alarming regularity? Multinational corporations like Google & Facebook, who also acquiesce censorship requests from dictatorships to conceal information on government networks. All of these corporations and their meme subsidiaries and butt buddies are huge supporters of "net neutrality".

Daily reminder that at the end of his second term, Obama handed ICANN to the United Nations.

if you're wondering what ISPs will do if net neutrality is repealed, we already know.

2005 - Madison River Communications was blocking VOIP services. The FCC put a stop to it. https://www.cnet.com/news/telco-agrees-to-stop-blocking-voip-calls/

2005 - Comcast was denying access to p2p services without notifying customers.

2007-2009 - AT&T was having Skype and other VOIPs blocked because they didn't like there was competition for their cellphones. http://fortune.com/2009/04/03/group-asks-fcc-to-probe-iphone-skype-restrictions/

2011 - MetroPCS tried to block all streaming except youtube. https://www.wired.com/2011/01/metropcs-net-neutrality-challenge/

2011-2013, AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon were blocking access to Google Wallet because it competed with their bullshit. http://www.businessinsider.com/verizon-blocking-google-wallet-2011-12

2012, Verizon was demanding google block tethering apps on android because it let owners avoid their $20 tethering fee. This was despite guaranteeing they wouldn't do that as part of a winning bid on an airwaves auction. https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-tech/post/fcc-fines-verizon-125m-for-blocking-tethering-apps/2012/07/31/gJQAXjRLNX_blog.html

2012, AT&T - tried to block access to FaceTime unless customers paid more money. https://www.freepress.net/press-release/99480/att-blocking-iphones-facetime-app-would-harm-consumers-and-break-net-neutrality

2013, Verizon literally stated that the only thing stopping them from favoring some content providers over other providers were the net neutrality rules in place. https://www.savetheinternet.com/blog/2013/09/18/verizons-plan-break-internet

As much as I am against the government having more say in what the ISPs can and cannot do, I am still for net neutrality.

With ISPs having regional monopolies parts of the country, and with a history as this post details >>133378152 , I simply can't trust that ISPs have it out for my best interests.

If ISPs didn't have a monopoly I would be against net neutrality.

This so much. I have no clue on the issue and every source is biased. One argument is that people want netflix etc to pay their "fair share" the cost of the das they use, but doesn't NN mandate that they pay a consistent amount anyway? Comcast is allowed to jack up prices, just not jack up Netflix's price per bit per sec more than any other company. What is wrong with that? Honest question.

I havn't heard a single argument against NN that has swayed me. The hardline stance that regulation=bad is absurd. Ideally we wouldn't have regional monopolies in the first place, but a band-aid is still a band-aid. NN doesn't prevent us from removing the government control that supports these monopolies, and it does reduce monopoly bullshit tactics in the meantime.

no it started to fuck up and thats why we grassrooted net neutrality into existence. Since it already doesn't exist, and it hasn't existed for the entirety of it's life, no. But what I don't support is ANY government putting their grubby jew fingers in it under the banner of "neutrality", and believe me, those companies that worship net neutrality violate it every single chance they get when a government puts a few dollars in their pocket. They're as full of shit as the "let's let the government dictate net neutrality" movement.
>>
>>133376847
net neutrality was created to keep big media from gobbling the internet up. but its pretty much owned by 5 companies right now anyway. well of course except for all the cool shit corporations dont fuck with because its not profitable. Most of you come from reddit now so this doesnt sound like such a bad idea. well you are fools and want to stifle the little guy to give 3 giant cable companies all the power. people in america dont get options for internet because the fucking cable companies ate up the subsidies and didnt build new infrastructure like they should have. you see they are already fucking us as it is.
>>
>>133380176

>>
>>133381755
So, NN keeps companies from paying more to have faster access or what?
>>
>>133380523
there is merit in keeping the internet working as a "dumb line", since corporate ownership of the internet would be just as bad as government ownership of it. Net Neutrality does not give the government very much regulatory power at all, but it stifles corporate telecom power over the internet.

overall it's a good tradeoff as the regulatory power the government gains from this is worth a lot less than the power ISP's wield. Many on here would say "well we had net neutrality before and nothing happened" and they're not wrong, but we're in an age where our Telecoms like Time Warner and Comcast own significant portions of the media and are vastly more powerful than they've ever been.

ISPs don't have a monopoly anymore in many places. The only reason they ever had one in the first place was because of cronyism in local and state governments. If you don't like your ISP, switch to another one. Or start your own.
>>
>>133373582
How the fuck do you trust your cable provider so implicitly, when you can't even get one of them on the fucking phone for tech support?

The only faggots who think net neutrality is bullshit, are the faggots who think the GOP actually gives a shit about their problems instead of giving tax cuts to their friends. Your cable provider will be able to sell YOUR data to anyone it fucking wants to, including the NSA or the cops. They'll be able to control data traffic from certain sites (that'll pay them handsomely for the privilege), and they'll be able to filter search results of the companies that don't pay them.

I wish I had that kind of inherent trust from the dumb masses. I'd make a fucking fortune controlling what sites they had access to and forcing them to see only the search results that paid me that day.

>>
>>133382962
Fiber is available in most major cities and is expanding aggressively. DSL sucks, but it is competition. LTE and other cellular plans are viable, community WiFi is catching on, satellite is available if desperate. Just because you hate Comcast doesn't mean you need to regulate them and it definitely doesn't mean you are beholden to them.

The Internet is a luxury. Not a utility. Giving the FCC control over Internet content is a gateway to the FCC regulating what is and isn't allowed. Under Obama NN rules, there were already politicians and pundits talking about expanding FCC control to banning piracy, pornography and obscenity.

Net Neutrality at it's core is forced equality by the government's hands. No shit the commies are for it, it's right out of their playbook.

The way to dismantle monopolies is not to seperate it into large chunks but to slice it into many, many different pieces. Smaller companies can do deals with other smaller companies and wrestle away the market share from the large monopolies which will not provide that specific service. Meanwhile the actual big carriers are incentivised to keep their platform as unrestricted as possible to retain their large hold on the market.

youre dancing around my point like a fucking fairy trying to avoid the real issue there is effectively an internet monopoly right now in most of america. what I mean by that is there are no other real options to access the internet other than very expensive cellular and satellite option. meaning the governmnet needed to step in because the cable companies were gearing up to make the internet cable 2.0 by controlling access. Its why we started this whole fucking net neutrality fight a few years ago.

the main problem is they are losing cable customers by the hundreds of thousands every month. they are losing the control of information. This is what this whole thing is about. they want to control what can and cant be seen on the internet. but more than that its to allow smaller internet sites to operate without having to buy licensing fees like you would if you wanted to make a cable channel.

That's a conservation measure in a place where the fresh water supply is physically limited. That link says the state government imposed the rationing to conserve water through the drought. Companies left to their own devices would rather sell at premium rates to supply Beverly Hills pool parties and let the rest of the state die of thirst. Water would be rationed either way, but this way everyone gets to live.

Holy fucking shit, read what I write before you respond like an ignorant tween shit.

You keep bringing up monopolies as if Net Neutrality addresses the actual problem with lack of ISP competition. Monopolies in cable companies have been around for decades, but competition in the form of satellite TV disrupted that and forced cable companies to be more competitive. But even this is a digression. It has fucking NOTHING to do with Net Neutrality. There are tons of alternatives to cable nowadays. If you don't have those alternatives available to you, that is because of cronyism.
Cable companies already impose bandwidth restrictions and download limits. This also isn't solved with Net Neutrality.
But enough about fucking CABLE COMPANIES. They are dinosaurs. If they choose to block access to 4chan, you can circumvent that by giving your money to somebody else. If the government chooses to block access to 4chan, however, what will you do with yourself?

I should know i live in a rural area, was a nightmare hughs net limits data ect every1 hated it, then comes fast non data capped internet to rival it outta no where. Upgraded to new internet , now i hear fiber optic is a couple years away in my area. People get dis satisfied and become new markets for isp's.

People sound like damn communists, they remind me of venezuelans, they would rather have muh monoploized internet dominated by giants all , rather than face scary free market capitalism, its like wanting a guaranteed one roll of toilet paper a month, rather then allow in evil capitalists and taking a chance of having the option to buy one of several brands of tp a month.

Net neutrality is all about achieving control over everyone's Internet connections. It's a ploy by SJW Jewscum to punish everyone for thought crimes. They say it's about preventing corporations from controlling traffic but that's actually a lie, the publicly available contents of the bill are fake, the real bill they'd pass would give all trannies free reign over your network traffic.
I have two verified and reputable sources for this claim.[1][2]

the internet is a wonderful resource if you use it correctly. thats what the problem is. people think the internet is for facebook and reddit and youtube. these are just normie collectors. All the really good shit will be pushed aside for using the internet to stream cable shows. and this is what they want to do. streaming hd video takes a ton of bandwidth. they basically want to put that kind of traffic in the fast lanes and put regular internet on the back burner. you see why this would be a problem I hope.
>>133378654
places like youtube pay for the upload bandwidth and infrastructure themselves. If I make a website I pay a datacenter to keep me on a solid 1000Gb up and download. All of these high end connections are already leased from the cable companies. what they want to do is slow everyone else down for multiple reasons.

Net neutrality hasn't ever existed in Australia. We have ISPs explicitly providing unmetered access to content. Competition and prices have never been better.

Net neutrality will actually preserve these monopolies rather than break them up.

Take >>133386739's example
>/pol/ or 4chan gets too big and starts to get paywalled
>Hiro is too much of a jew and refuses to pay out extra shekels
>Content is slowed and people get frustrated
>Demand is still there
>People create a competing version which siphons off people who are fed up
>4chan traffic is no longer high enough to qualify as needing to be paywalled
>2 /pol/s exist (creating competition) and everyone is happy

And let's look at it from the other perspective
>Net neutrality is introduced
>4chan keeps growing larger and larger
>No-one else can even start a competing service as something as simple as no-one can offer something that can counter the allure of high traffic
>Monopoly is formed
>the highly centralised nature makes it a prime target for shady shit to occur, info being sold to marketing research and Hiro introducing shit like his own paywalls to capitalise on marketshare
>End users suffer as a result and have no other options
>>
>>133389364
It's not unrelated. You're talking about the government regulating the availability of Internet content provided by an ISP. ISPs are private companies who don't own the content they provide. NN-fags believe that without NN, ISPs will switch to literally the Netflix model where they curate and license content. Do you really think there's a difference?
>>
Just a reminder, when a large amount of threads (((suspiciously))) appear about a certain topic, you're witnessing astroturfing
>>
>>133389487
Companies that run websites can allow or refuse whatever content they want. It's their website, and anything that goes on that website is their content, over which they alone have purview.
ISPs can also do this. But that's wrong, because your Internet traffic should belong to you, not to your ISP.
The net neutrality bill would make it so that ISPs can't do this.
So, for example, if you had an SJW ISP that censored Stormfront, they would no longer be allowed to censor Stormfront.
>>
>>133389546

>If I were to start my own ISP,
You weren't.
The ISPs that already exist control the market, and they've gotten themselves into a nice comfy place where they always will. Your hypothetical ISP would be dead in the water no matter WHAT you offered. Either that, or you'd have a few days of high traffic and high revenue and then you'd "disappear."
THAT is how capitalism works.
And THAT is why something like net neutrality is necessary.
Because it's the closest we're gonna get to market reform.
>>133390392
The corporations whose asses the FCC is licking have money. All the FCC itself has is their belly fat. If they don't abide by the law as it's formulated, there are all kinds of nasty things we can do to them that we couldn't do to some nebulous entity like a corporation, especially not without a legal statement to back it up (which, if net neutrality is not realized, would not exist).

well thats pretty much what they want to do. they want to turn the internet into a cable streaming service. hell most of them already provide that option for free. but they are realizing they cant keep it up. its just too much bandwidth being used as background noise for most people, so they can do one of two things. Build the infrastructer out tax subsidies were supposed to pay for or Slow sites like youtube and netflix down in favor of their own version of these sites. Which do you think they will do if given the option? well we already know. They didnt build up the infrastructure like they were supposed to so that cats out of the bag. That leaves bullshit kikery in order to "compete". The best part about this whole fight they are putting up is people arent dropping thier cabls service because they would rather watch movies on a tablet. they just dont like 99% of whats on cable. They really dont understand that people just dont like the content on tv anymore.
>>
>>133390094
There have been hundreds upon hundreds of chan sites which have sprung up and died over the years.

Purely because the traffic hasn't been enough to keep them sustainable. The only major ones that got any life were specifically created to to cater to communities/interests that 4chan rejected like /i/ and the pedoshit with 12chan.

Ultimately the success of a forum hinges on the ability to speak freely as possible while having a many people as possible that can hear you.
