In the 19th century you had established organisations that represented the scientific knowlege of the time and of course they tried to keep people out that questioned their theories.
Nowadays the same excludling of critics happen by just saying "it's settled science".
Liberals and Conservatives accuse eachother of being anti sience when they both cherry pick the scientific results that fit their ideology.
People conduct studies to support their ideology rather than to find more truth.
