I have no experience with cross country, but simply jogging 3 times a week has been great for me, and is going to be great for you too.
The human body is meant for movement, and jogging is good for your health, looks, and mood. It is a relatively cheap hobby too. Can't ask for more, can you?
So 3 times a week go jog for 1/2 an hour. There are free websites that can help you start without putting your knees into danger. You thank me later.
