Can we just talk about this?

I've just noticed that a lot of parents just give their kid an iPad, in order to get them to shut the fuck up. These parents come home after a long day at work, and don't want to hear their kids shout or cry or make noise in general. So they just buy an iPad for 500 euros to be done with it. Now these kids are playing on their iPad and watching tv non-stop, depriving them of using their creativity. They don't have to find ways of entertaining themselves, one tap on the screen and you're there. I'm honestly concerned these machines are destroying an entire generation. What does /pol/ think?

In my opinion it really is a problem that needs to be addressed.

Pic related, what we used to play with.

What I want to know is when did this fucking "colouring books for adults" shit start and why it is still going.
>>
>>133325071
I never had this exact set, but it was always on my wish list.

>>133325080
I believe this was an episode 3 set, about the fight on the Whookie planet. Forgot what it's called, but from this series we also had the turbo tank.
>>

It's a huge problem, they end up on 4chan and make threads like /ptg/ that destroy the site

Posting from an iPad in my bed right now, it's pretty nice to be honest.
>>
>>133324960
Toothpaste thats very rich of you including a Lego set where there is litteraly no creativity as there are a fucking set of instructions telling you step by step how to build that thing.

Obviously you can do whatever you want with the pieces, but the kids will go the easy path, given them the generic Lego set of standard pieces and then they can build their own shit.

I think the new generations are more acoustumed to the "give me now" than the older generatios
>>
>>133325478
I see. These clones are supposed to have green markings right?
>>
>>133324960
Shit nigga, I still have this set along with the turbotank (the original one that came with Mace Windu).
>>
>>133325487
Do they even sell generic sets any more?
>>
>>133325532
The ones on Kashykk had green camo markings and had scout uniforms as well
>>
>>133325607
Yes they do actually, I bought one to my nephew last week, it's called the classic if I remember correctly, 600 pieces or so. It was a yellow box
>>
>>133325487
I'm pretty sure my mother has my legos from when I was a kid in the 80s somewhere
It was just a tub full of generic blocks

Nieces and nephews play with them when we go there during the holidays
>>
>>133325719
Yeah but those don't really have pieces for wheels, windshields and other things needed to build cars and trucks, do they?
>>
not to discount your objections, but this has been a common fear since the development of the written word. Socrates himself argued that it was inferior to dialogue. Similar objections have come and gone with the development of the printing press, telephones, television, etc. Not to say that they didn't have valid arguments, but this progression will never stop. All you can do is adapt and try to teach your kids (if you have them) to use these technologies to enrich their lives, and not be a slave to them. There are still ways to be creative on an ipad, kids will never stop being creative.
>>
>>133325719
Last time I went to a toy shop which was a few months back to buy my nephew a birthday present there was nothing but branded shit and not just lego. It was like there was only three different franchises in existence. It pissed me off enough that I didn't buy anything there. In the end I bought him a pocket knife and told him to have fun.
>>
>>133325487
You're assuming they'll even build it themselves.

>>
>>133324960
As if i wasn't put in front of my PS1 to shut me up. Toys have always been there to make kids shut the fuck up. Hell, my sisters kid is like 6 and already speaks English thanks to YouTube, but he still loves his lego sets. So i don't really see what you're getting at.
>>
Growing up my parents hated the fact that I was #pcmasterrace because I'd pretty much ignore them all the time while I pioneered the internet.

It's a series of tubes you know or was it a big truck that you can just dump things on.

Pol is a collective hivemind of failed individuals who come together over something basic as skin color. They are losers, and from this resentment escalates racism and other garbage ideologies. I look forward to war, as an upper class citizen, to purge America of whiney losers, both black and white, whom of which have no respect for the work and cultivation that defines the individual.

I noticed when my younger cousin was growing up he would never build his own stuff with his legos.
I always used repurpose the pieces into my own machinations, but all he ever did was play with the minifigs. He'd build the sets as per the instructions, but then he'd just play with them as if they were props for the minifig.

I partly blame Lego for licensing existing franchises. In my day it was all just generic pirates/knights/ufo/etc. Now it's all licensed movie characters and shit.

My friend and I did something like this with knex when i was 11 or so.
We had a formal living room with a 20ft ceiling. About 10 years later when the house was sold there was still white specks on the red ceiling where the tower scraped the popcorn texture off.
We built it in prefab segments, then assembled the segments from the top down, lifting the entire thing up to slide new segments in at the bottom.

Computers, including all networking capable devices with microprocessors, need to be restricted and regulatex. Getting caught with a laptop you do not have a virtually impossible to obtain permit for should be a 10 year prison sentence. Phones should be analog devices capable only of making calls, by law. If you actually need a computer for something productive, you should have to jump through permit hoops. If granted permission, you will be given a computer which you are unable to alter in any way at all, containing preset software for the sole purpose of the permit you were issued.

In short, computers must be made virtually illegal with SERIOUS penalties.

I worry about it too because we've always taken toys for granted. Think about how animals play with each other, the play is actually a form of learning as well because they learn to socialize, when to bite an animal, how to hunt together. how to perform the full functions of their species individual gifts...

Over time we humans have developed toys and games along with those instincts. But toys are hands on, like LEGOS teach kids to builds, action figures and talls teach kids how to interact with other people, games teach fairness and sportsmanship. These things are all fun but come with an extra gold lining of subconcious training.

I worry that could be lost with an iPad generation. Too much reliance on one machine/tool. Too many lazy parents as you say. But then again our generation was raised on screens, TV and videogames too, but we ALSO still had the toys.

So basically kids need better toys these days. A see a demand in the market that eagerly awaits a supply.

>>133325248

Because we falsely segregate certain activities between adults and kids. Thinking anything a kid does it for kids only. We don't even apply the logic consistently because kids play sports and adults worship sports players. We need to learn it's okay to have fun and enjoy one's creativity like you did as a kid, just as much as the kids enjoyed athleticism.

There is nothing wrong with extended youth considered that nature has shown the longer the youthful period of creature, the smarter and longer living the creature usually is.

I really like drawing and coloring my own drawings too. It's fun and it's get one thinking aesthetically.

In short mommy is a wageslave too and would rather spend time with her handheld machine than her child. Why would she want to raise it? Thats what schools are for. Generations before would do the same, but the distractions have gotten a lot better.

My kid has broad access to the Internet, kids shows and educational shows and video games. After an hour of whatever he likes doing, I make him rest his eyes. After two hours we have what I call analog time. Get some toys, get some paper, make something with your hands, I tell him. No more video screens.

I'm kind of a fuckup generally so often I let him go beyond the limits I set for him, or I fall asleep or whatever, but it's basically a good system, and it doesn't take a whole hell of a lot of work. He's does well in school, isn't socially fucked up because we go to the playgrounds fairly often. I don't think it takes that much effort to keep a lid on his use of electronics and exposure to media. A good content filter doesn't cost much, YouTube is easier to monitor and customize than most people seem to realize, and if you're on top of things the mistakes you make are an opportunity to roll out touchy subjects in a way that doesn't embarrass them. The other day he wandered dangerously close to Elsa related content and I put him on watch for adults trying to manipulate him, who are interested in making him think ugly things or trick him into giving them money. Knock on wood here but he's done well with this and I think it toughens him up a little.

If you want to be a parent I think it is important to make seeking out interesting new things be a regular part of your life. I mainly do this with music, but it has put me in a place where I can be open to the things that interest my son or else find palatable alternatives. This is important mainly because the time kids spend interacting with media is something you can do together.

That's not always good. Kids need time to themselves. For that matter electronic media isn't going anywhere and they need time to themselves with that as well. But it's also true kids are fucking up their eyes and not learning to use their hands or to build things or imagine independently of adult provided stimulus.

Borderline blog entry warning. Sorry, too much to drink.

When I was three I would sit alone in a room for hours watching PBS. Growing up I would sit alone in a room for hours playing Yar's Revenge and Asteroids, then Zork and Enchanter. One time I got my dad to play Zork with me, and my mom also, and for some reason they lost interest. Still makes me a little sad but it's one of those things only assholes bother their sick old parents about. (It's okay to ask them why they mutilated your baby dick, though.) For a while I made my own simple games in Basic. When I became confused and stopped, no one asked me why or what I was doing instead.

My mom had the excuse that she suffered from narcolepsy and had to care for my baby sister. My dad was an alcoholic and also some kind of media high roller. Still bums me out a little that they never took much of an interest in what I was into. Of course I overcompensate by involving myself too much in my kid's interests, but this also means I can steer him. (Fuck no, you aren't watching Cat in the Hat, put on some Backyardigans.) By the same token, when his mother is tired I make her play with him. I don't feel good about it but she'll regret it if I let her get away with relaxing and keeping to herself after work, which she well deserves.

To my young friends, DON'T let demoralizing posts about the difficulty of raising kids in the modern world put you off from starting a family. Your child will love you unless you are a real dick about these things. Leaving your kid alone with some entertainment for a few hours then hugging them and asking them what they did today is a million times better than not having the kid at all, or waiting until you're almost too olds. Don't let fear of not being able to parent well, or of being mommy-shamed, scare you away from having a family. Put all that aside, get your girl off the pill, make yourself an heir, and if you fuck up a little talk to them. Spend time with them, take an interest in the things they love, above all else read to them. But if sometimes you can't, it's going to be okay.

This is a good thread, and it's true. I know a lot of people who put their kids in front of iPads, and it's seriously harming their ability to entertain themselves or engage in play activities which are more conducive to learning and development.

I don't have so much of an issue with kids using smart devices or TVs, as long as it doesn't take up a majority of their time.

My issue is with kids owning such devices. I think it causes them to take them for granted.

Funny thing is mainstream sources have been saying this for years. As a parent you need only take a passing interest, maybe google once and skim some headlines, to get it through your thick skull that kids are overwhelmed by media, this negatively affects their development, and they need analog time and time spent alone. You don't even have to read the fucking articles. You can be fixated on yourself for 360 days out of the year and still absorb these simple ideas about childhood.

>>133335698
My kid has learned to appreciate his devices by breaking them. Now and then he will ask me, remember when I had an iPhone? And so on. (It was a hand-me down. I let him play with it while changing his diaper.) He is trying to make me feel bad for not replacing it. I tell him, "I'd have got you a new iPhone / Kindle / DS by now but you keep breaking them."

The problem is kids break their toys and parents replace them, so they thinking treating hard-won luxuries like this is okay. Also parents don't appreciate these things either. Case in point, all your friends with cracked smartphone screens.

He stopped a car in Numedal. Inside it was a family of three, who said that he hijacked the car at gunpoint.

So he's not only a murderer, a supporter of arson for Christian churches that teach people to actually care for their families - but also hates regular ass families enough to hold one at gunpoint to steal their car out in the wilderness, leaving the family for the dead.

I'm pretty sure this was among the first sets I played with as a kid.
Man I used to love these, spent so many days playing with them.
Nowadays I see kids playing with ipads and there's not a creative thought in their head. They just sit down tapping away at the screen, run after each other for a while and scream, then it's back to tapping the screen.
It's beyond me why a generation that grew up with legos, doesn't give them to their own kids.
Sure I had a computer, Commondore 64, Nintendo and all that shit when growing up, but I didn't spend my entire existence glued to them.

I think it comes down to parents engaging with their kids.
I remember my mother spending a lot of time building Legos with me and my brother, where as now the parents are more concerned about posting shit on Instagram and checking their Facebook every 4 minutes.
Thank fuck I was born before this era.

It unironically really fired the neurons.

You know I still enjoy lego and making the sets/models from them the issue is that they're so fucking expensive. I kinda moved from lego to model kits but both are interchangeable for me. I dislike the meme that lego is for kids. It is similar to the "growing up" meme where you're told to be miserable and not to enjoy life/have fun anymore.

My 4 years old nephew literally played some shitty games on an android like a few times and already got addicted. When he wants to play, he will cry and scream in order for you to give him a phone. I and my sister's husband don't give him a phone ever, but my mother and sister do, and then he spends hours staring in the little screen and digging virtual holes (he only plays excavators and some other construction vehicle related games). The kid's fucked.

Don't give your kids phones or computers until they're at least 8 years old. And even then, apply some goddamn moderation, motherfuckers.

Now that I think about it, this is exactly how I nowadays quickly scan pages for words I need to find.
Holy shit, did I develop the base for this skill from playing with Legos?
It's a great ability. Like pressing ctr + f in my brain, but I do it by unfocusing and quickly scanning through the entire page for the word I need to find and somehow my brain manages to pick it out from among the text.

It's a bitch to build without instructions sometimes but it's worth more time than the bullshit the general user base of those things do. Takes great pictures of the things I build and can directly get to posting them on /lg/ without needing to export every individual picture though so that's good.
>>
>>133339079
It's extra handy for everything really.
It saves a ton of time.
For example when I open a book or a page and I need to find a price or a solution to a problem, I just scan the page for money symbols or the keyword in my head.
Takes seconds and I don't have to read the entire thing to see if the page has anything of value.
Makes me wonder if human mind could actually read and understand the entire page like this in seconds, instead of just simply scanning through it for a word or sentence.
>>
>>133324960

Mine does sports.

I bought him a good bike and a bow to shoot in the backyard. So long as he is back before dinner, and then again before dark I let him do whatever.

We bowl for free in the summer and go just about daily. I set point thresholds and he wins cash if he achieves it. A buck for picking up any split.

Kids will do other things if you offer it to them. It just gets prohibitively expensive unless you know what you are doing or are well off.

>>133327143

If you want to do it right. A second hand bike, a burner cell phone and the freedom to skin some knees and go on adventures is all they want and is a good choice on a budget.

If you get a nerd kid you can buy bulk magic commons for a penny per card.

I am a foster parent to my niece and nephew. They aren't that bad, but I've quickly learned that any "game" must have a way to lose and you must encounter this loss within 10 minutes of playing.

If it's not a total loss of the match, it has to at least be a death or other bad happening with a consequence.

As >>133338868 said, these mini "games" are designed for addictive potential. You won't be able to get them to put them down or even focus on anything. They will quickly become spoiled and hate when other games (or life in general) has consequences for failing.

>>
>>133334398

This is 100% correct.

Everything everyone ever told you about the difficulty of parenting lied to you. These are the same people who thought algebra was hard in high school, why should you trust their assessment?

I am 29 and am just now having my first biological child. I've had my niece and nephew for some time now, and am amazed at what a breeze it has been. I literally just enforce homework before play and read with them at night, they are self sufficient for the rest.

Children are still people. They are autonomous beings with brains, and if you show them simple tasks they can be very self sufficient. You can show a 6 year old how to cook scrambled eggs in the microwave or operate the toaster. They can feed themselves, clothe themselves, and keep themselves occupied by this age; quite frankly, raising four kids to this point is easier and faster than getting a bachelor's degree.

It depends what they're doing on an iPad, if they're playing something where they can express creativity like say minecraft then that can teach them quite a lot.

I suspect people using electronics from a young age now will be much faster adapted to computers later in life and more likely to get into programming and higher paid jobs.

But it's going to completely fuck the generation in terms of social skills and ability to interact with people in real life, unless parents force their children to go play with other kids face to face.

>I suspect people using electronics from a young age now will be much faster adapted to computers later in life and more likely to get into programming and higher paid jobs.

You would suspect wrong.

Phones are designed to not be computers. They are locked down and simplified. There is no need to understand computing; you don't even need to type with how strong dictation software has become.

https://nces.ed.gov/fastfacts/display.asp?id=171

SAT scores are down over the last 12 years. This is a test that is normalized and is supposed to re-balance every year based on last year's results. Test gets easier, but scores are even LOWER. This new crop is dumb as hell; they are learning to compute on inferior devices and don't know the difference.
