I went to a university in a huge city with ~60,000 undergrads and ~20,000 post-grads. I was more or less relegated to associating only with other active Greeks in fratland which was about ~400 people all together, going to the same bars on the same nights and having the same conversations with the same vapid sluts and retarded dudebros every week.

They say it is great for networking. This is only half true. It's true that the alumni association provides you with a large network of professionals. The problem is that 90% or more of alums are just regular people with regular jobs. Maybe they even have really good jobs and make six figures -- but they still don't have the corporate capital to offer out jobs to whoever they like, whenever they like. You're more than likely better off freely associating and networking with high-achievers outside of fratland.

The pseudo-masonic bullshit and hollow, meaningless "secrecy" is retarded. The traditions are retarded. The philanthropy is retarded.

It's phony posturing -- they employ a sort of "fake it til you make it" approach... but since they are almost all invariably betas at heart the "make it" is just getting laid a lot which means almost all frat guys are just pathetic faggots jerking each other off over how many Beckys and Staceys they fucked.

Another thing that attracts betas to fraternities is the safety blanket. Like I said, I went to a school in a big city and when you're coming from a small town or even just a smaller city at the age of 18 or sometimes even 17 it can be overwhelming. The "brothers" provide you with a false sense of security in the familial sense and the chapter house provides a home base for you to quit holding your breath. This is why the vast majority of people who pledge fraternities are freshmen -- older students don't need to lean on the fraternity crutch and they actually HAVE made it, they don't need to fake it, and they realize how fucking retarded Greek life is.

The prototypical fraternity and frat boy persona is just smoke and mirrors and you would be much better off going your own way.

When I started college I tried joining a frat. I wasn't sure about it but I went to the hazing anyway. They were going to make us tie string with our mouth around some dude's dick and then put a pickle between our ass and run down the hallway like that scene in clerks 2. I said fuck that and they started yelling at me and trying to encourage me to do it. Some guy got in my face and said I'm a pussy if I can't handle a little hazing to join a brotherhood. I couldn't take it, I punched that kid in the face and they grabbed me. I kicked a lamp over and broke a window, my friends who were outside (they gave me a ride cause my truck broke down earlier) came running in and started fighting. Fought people for like 10 minutes before they ran off. Angry, I went into the kitchen to take their alcohol. Ended up leaving with like $200 worth of liquor and found a cash box, took that too.
