It depends what the alternatives are.

IMO it's better to have income taxes than sales taxes. Taxes on unimproved land value would be better still, but would need a long time to be phased in and may not generate enough revenue.

If there's zero income tax, it means the government doesn't have a stake in the population getting rich, and are likely to resort to false economies, underspending on the things that make the nation more prosperous in the long term (they do this already to some degree, but without income tax I think the problem would be a lot worse).

Ultimately the limitations are political not economic. It's likely the peak of the Laffer Curve is above 70%, but nowadays such tax rates would be politically impossible.

we dont live in the same world we did in the 50's, when American companies were basically American first, and had little else as an option but to abide by the rules.

But these days, with 'free trade", globalism and the rise of multinational corporations, if you just blindly raise taxes on the rich and on big corporations, they WILL just leave. Look at how many companies relocated their HQ to ireland for the lower tax rate

you would first need to somehow prevent companies from leaving and prevent the rich from moving and storing their wealth out of the country, and if you did all of that all at once, you'd get cuba tier flight, with all the rich and corporations scrambling to leave before it takes effect, or cutting their losses and outright abandoning their American operations and reestablishing outside the US.

this is something that needs to be done gradually, and raising the tax rate is NOT the first order of business.
