I think it's more about them paying someone else to do it for them. And come on, if you order a two ingredient item instead of just making yourself you are fucking terrible at life. If you are traveling okay, you gotta do what you gotta do, otherwise it's just a waste of money.

That being said, no, it probably isn't going to save you enough to buy a house. I figure the guy was making a point that young people waste money on frivolous things and that was just his hyperbolic example, but either way I think he makes a valuable point.

FUCKING Millennials and the overindulgent luxuries such as 'Vegetation smeared on cooked bread'
When will they start growing up and buying diamonds!
>>
>>133301179
What the "millionaire" (lol... does that even MEAN ANYTHING nowadays?!?!) meant was...

>GO buy an Avocado for $0.95
>Go buy a loaf of whole grain bread for $2.50
>Mash Avocado and place on toast with salt, pepper and a squirt of lemon wedge
>Eat fucktons of Avocado-Toast for less than $4

But instead they go to
>Le Trendy Hipster Cafe #42069
and pay $8.50 for a slice of toast with 1/16 of an avocado smeared onto it.

They deserve their misery. I cook for myself and my wife is even better at it than I (and I'm no scrub when it comes to making food!)

We eat 5-star tier meals MORNING-NOON & NIGHT and only spend about $350 per month on food for myself, her and our two kids.

Hipster faggots don't even have kids but somehow spend 7 times more per month on food while also being malnourished!! Amazing! Sad! ...GAY!

Avocado's are about $1, lets exaggerate and say $2. I buy like 1 a week. But not every week. So maybe 3/2 of the time I have one.

52 weeks in a year, 2/3 of that is 34.6, rounded to 35.

I've been moved out and paying for my groceries for a while, but only had a job where I wasn't eating bags of beans and pasta since 2012. So, 5 years, x 35 weeks each.

This greatly exaggerates the amount of avocados I have purchased. Now that I think about it, it's closer to one a month and that covers my wife and I.

But fuck it, 5 x 35 x 2. In my entire life, a dramatic over estimate in both price and frequency says I have spent about $350 on Avocados.

A New 4/2 home in my area runs for $479,000, My net worth is about $138k including retirement accounts and I am told I am among the top performing millennials.

Meanwhile, when faggot boomers bought their house in the 60's, the new home price was under $17,200 and average yearly income was around $4,396. A master's in Engineering could easily make over $8000 per year.

A house was roughly 2-4x income.

today, the average new home price is $406,000 but average income is only $52,000. For a Master's it's only $70,000

This is home prices that are 6-8x normal salaries, yet millennials are the worst paid and least employed of all generations, so we are far from national average salary. Most states Millennials earn about $22k, and new homes cost about 20x that.

So no, $350 in fucking toast isn't going to make me a god damn home owner.

Fuck the race war, can we just purge the old boomers? We could talk blacks into letting us do it by saying it's mostly racist old white rich men. Damn the consequences, we deserve revenge. It makes me sick that these old bastards get to retire on a growing housing market that is going to leave us destitute and homeless.

I hate boomers more than any other group, they sold us out and blame us for everything while outsourcing the jobs and demonizing the Unions they got to benefit from.

It makes sense though.
On the one hand, a lot of millennials complain that they don't have money.
On the other hand, those same people spend $20 a day on Starbucks and $50 a week on luxury meals outside of breakfast lunch and dinner.
Then they spend $5 to $10 a month on the gym so they can work off all that sugar from Starbucks, instead of just riding a bicycle and not drinking the damn sugar in the first place.

I've always stuck by one simple rule: never spend more than you personally have. My first bank account opened when I was 16.
I always dealt with cash up to that point so the rule was rather enforced if I wanted to spend big from time to time.
Something tells me those people who'd rather spend money on avocado toast than a roof over their head didn't learn that lesson.

PS: it helps that I don't desire much.
>>
>>133311822
The entire argument is stupid. Some fat rich boomer is going to tell me I spend too much on food and that's why I can't buy a house? The costs are off by several orders of magnitude.

It wouldn't matter if Millennials overspent on cheap things by hundreds of percent. House prices have outstripped and continue to outgrow wages by such a large amount, that even the down payment takes years to save up for. This is especially for folks under 35.

Back in the day a house was only a couple times salary and almost every guy had a solid job. Now, it's 20x salary and we have shit jobs and unemployment can strike any time. We don't have unions, none that are worth shit anyway, and no one fights for our wages. Millennial wage has actually gone down over time and unemployment with our group has gone up, all while our costs are through the roof.

Saying we over spend is as stupid as saying "Generation Z can't afford to live in million dollar tents because they don't take a penny from the coin things at gas stations."

It's so out of touch lv 100.

These boomers think they know the value of a dollar, but we know it hundreds of times better. I've had paychecks for a week's work, that after fines and hour cuts, was only $54, and in a world where my rent was in the thousands. People that could walk out of highschool and get the equivalent of a $120k job today, just because labor unions and factories were everywhere.... Then they vote to destroy these things, outsource everything, then complain that we're overspending our pennies.

I've already bought a condo, as long as property is growing you can't afford not to buy in. I flipped it and make a huge profit selling to some chink. It made more money than my job as an engineer for a big defense company. I am now doubling down and putting all of my income into down payments and mortgages to rent and flip. I am in the top 5% of earners for people under 35 and I am still only about 30% the income to house price ratio that my father had at the same age. It should not be this hard to catch up. those of us that do catch up have to work harder than any boomer ever did.

you're doing it wrong. You need the heavy browing reactions of toasting to get ANY flavor in that dish. you want to cook the toast to the line before burnt. in fact if you look at it and you think "hey this maybe, just might, could be burned," then it's perfect.

dont mash the avocados, wtf would you mash eat, you have fucking teeth, slice that shit. lightly salt it and top with some pico de gallo and cilantro micro green with kefir lime zest microplaned on top...

>>133320287
I have already explained this in further comments like 3 times. You're a massive faggot. Click someone's ID to see their posts before randomly replying to one. This is a discussion, not randomly jump in and post whatever.

The advice we are being given would only save hundreds to thousands of dolalrs and sometimes over years. It's out of touch because the house prices I showed, that kind of money made a difference in buying homes when they were young because homes were 15,000-30,000. A down payment was only a few thousand dollars.

Today, a down payment on an average new home is $81,200, it would take several lifetimes of cutting back on groceries and eating out to save that much.

The problem is, even if most people in our generation never had to eat or pay rent, it would take several years for the average millennial to even afford a down payment.

In the time it takes us to earn enough for a down payment, boomers were able to completely own the house.

Home prices are up over 600% since the 80's but income is only up 7%

This ratio gets worse and worse the further back you go. That trend is the goddamn problem. It's going to leave our kid's generation in trailers even if they work above average jobs.
>>
>>133301179
Yeah why don't millennials go buy a house with a sale price equal to a quarter of their gross annual household income like their parents did and then sell it to the Chinese real estate speculators instead of keeping it in the family like their parents did. Sheesh.

Millennials just think they are above criticism because they had life hard or maybe they feel like they got crapped on too much.

I see the same people come everyday at my job at Dutch Bros, they spend like 5-7 bucks a drink, doing this at least once probably twice a night. They can easily be spending 140 on coffee a month.

Millennials also have a lot of vices such as recreation MJ and vapes. Staying good in MJ costs people 300 bucks monthly sometimes. With financial aid and urban housing, they can't ever save for a future.

One can say its not fair to bash millennials for just wanting to enjoy life but OTOH, you can say they don't seem to understand why they can't build homes or families, they are broke.

Kind of a chicken or egg thing.

While avocado on toast definitely sounds homosexual, I could have stopped eating anything at all when I hit 18 and still wouldn't have enough money to buy a house. My second cousin has been doing that "experiment" since she was 16. She is 21 now half way through her law degree, eating essentially 30-40% of her recommended daily calories, and she cant even afford to live in a dorm. She is absolutely skeletal thin and I occasionally force feed her stuff to stop her dying. So yeah, even if that were a legitimate argument, its utter bullshit.

I can only imagine its worse in hyper-inflated anglos-saxon housing markets.

I agree with you that too many millennials spend a chunk of their income on weed, restaurants, and what I call "instagram trips" wherein the sole purpose of their vacation is to post pictures of themselves having "cultural experiences." However, a goodly number are looking at a lifetime of depressed wages because of unrestricted immigration and H1B job thievery coupled with housing transitioning from a basic commodity to an investment vehicle and that shit goes back to their boomer parents voting neoliberal politicians in to office to keep their gravy train rolling.
>>
>>133321088
Grim prospects. And everyone knows its pointless, thats why millenials spend on travel and experiences and good food, because they know there is no way out and they will be wagecucking until natural death or suicide. I know /pol/ thinks Gen Z is better but they are even worse off, they know its pointless too and have also seen the uselessness of college education. Go ask a high school teacher what their students do in class. Its not like it was when we were there whatsoever. They spend 100% of their time on social media and a large percentage want to be e-celebs because its almost the only example of people their age being successful

To be fair millenials are fucking stupid with their money and can't into savings at all.

Everybody I know spends dozens of dollars every week in bars, they go to music festivals, they get new clothes when the stuff they have isn't even used up, they break their phone all the fucking time, they eat out a lot. I work slightly above minimum wage, I have rent and other bills to pay and I still save half of my money. I spend almost NOTHING on myself other than necessities. I ain't the most social person out there, but socializing doesn't even have to be expensive.

Tbqh if bars or alcohol stopped existing, Millenials would be much richer, party culture is ruining them.
>>
>>133301179
I was at a bakery the other day that actually had avocado toast on their menu, they were charging like $5.00 for it.

Why would anyone pay that much? It's literally just mashed avocado on toast, a person could make it themselves in less time and for less money than that.
>>
>>133332483

Bar culture is why I am convinced we live in a simulation.

They are ALL expensive yet they are EVERYWHERE. You would think there would eventually be bars that compete based on price and clobber the market.

This never happens. It boldly defies capitalism somehow.
>>
I didn't read the thread, but is he really saying spending a dollar for an avocado sometimes is the reason I can barely keep my house on a 48 hour work week?
>>
>>133332862
I feel like part of the reason may be that there's an expectation for a bar to be expensive. Like its high cost is inherently indicative of its quality.
After all, there are coffee places that are both better and cheaper than Starbucks, but don't do near as much business as Starbucks.

It seems to me that there may be some price line below which the bar would actually lose business due to people viewing it as a cheap dive.

"Peanuts are rich in essential nutrients (right table, USDA nutrient data). In a 100 g serving, peanuts provide 570 calories and are an excellent source (defined as more than 20% of the Daily Value, DV) of several B vitamins, vitamin E, several dietary minerals, such as manganese (95% DV), magnesium (52% DV) and phosphorus (48% DV), and dietary fiber (right table). They also contain about 25 g protein per 100 g serving, a higher proportion than in many tree nuts.[46]"

Wut? Quick comparison, peanuts are healthier when it comes to nutrients. Full of calories too so it's a very good way to pad your calorie intake. Honestly a diet of fruits and nuts would take you a long way as long as you get some meat from time to time, doubt nuts have all the proteins you need.

In addition, peanuts are a good source of vitamin E, a nutrient that many of us don’t get enough of in our diets.

Millennials are the scapegoat generation. They're the cause of every societal ill and can somehow simultaneously be terrible with their money while also not spending anything and killing every business. It's absolute cognitive dissonance to distract from the real causes and shift blame.

Avocado toast is some bullshit hipster food at a 1000% markup from material cost. It's the food equivalent of some hipster bar where one beer is twice the cost of a 6 pack of the same beer.

I work across from this cafe called the Mill in SF, who brought avocado toast to the city. Their avocado toast is 12 dollars. Just "artisan bread" and avocado + season salt.

it's highway robbery.

Makes me think this is a brilliant marketing tactic by avocado growers.

Turn the fruit into a political topic and a luxury item. Millennials will think eating them is an edgy act of rebellion, and post their guac on instagram to appear wealthy.

also a hue problem is that so much of their luxury spending goes into consumption and services.

people love to rant about millennials buying the most recent iphone when their budget doesn't really allow that, but at least that money is not 100% lost a couple moments later but will still retain some of it's value, with iphones even for a pretty long time due to their cult status.

but the fucking avocado toast for $10 at your hipster cafe will have exactly zero rest value once it's eaten. the $16 delivery pizza you ordered because you were too lazy to just make one yourself for a fraction of that won't build any wealth, either.

if they'd at least spend it on non-deprecating (or only slowly deprecating) goods they would still be building up wealth that could be liquefied if necessary.

One of my aunts retired at 50 and is living on her retirement fund. One of my grandfathers worked in a lumbermill and bought himself a house, two cars, and had 6 kids which he put through college. On a damned lumbermill worker's paycheck.

I'm having a hard time finding a well paying/sure to be there 5 years from now mechanical engineering job (core in mechatronics and industrial automation). There's zero chance of a retirement package at 2/3rds of my salary 30 years from now. The idea of buying a house, new car or raising a family isn't even something I would consider possible right now.

Look it up, someone working as a "soda jerk" in a soda shop selling icecream and sodas in the 1950's would earn enough to pay for a NEW house, a NEW car and raise a family of 3+ kids. That can't happen anymore.

This.

I can see it with my dad. He's lucky enough that he earns enough money that his wasteful spending doesn't hurt him too bad, but he could have easily retired in his 50s already if he had paid a bit more attention to it. He's flushing down thousands per year and just too fucking lazy to fix it.
I even offered to take care of it for him for the most part (since a lot of the money is lost on insurances and so on so it's just a bit of paperwork to save it), but he'd still have to do some of it himself so he'd rather say "fuck it".

Fucking stupid sentiment, doing that bit of paperwork would take him a fraction of the time he needs to earn the money he's losing on wasteful spending.

Wait a minute, people really pay $6 for a starbuck coffee ?

Not so long ago there was a starbuck truck for promoting the brand in my country, and it was offering coffee for free.
I was with friends so we got one and it was sugar water with bad taste, and most people that were getting a coffee to see what's the fuss looked like they were disappointed too.
I didn't know it's was $6, I thought they were like 1.5/2 euros at most like any other coffee here.
Now I understand why that one in my city always looks empty.

It's like that sandwich stuff "subway", 6 euros sandwich with shit bread and it tastes worse than a 2.5/3 euros sandwich from the bakery with fresh baguette and shit. Who the fuck thought it would be a good idea to come here...

I agree, except starbucks is right on my way home next to my grocery store and I usually stop for a coffee when I stop for my weekly groceries. I brew all my other coffee at home. Still it's factual that if money is so tight that $2000 matters it's stupid to spend that on frivolous shit.

There's somewhat of an issue of a lot of millennials being raised to be more traditionally fiscally-conservative but not being given the opportunities or lent the same confidence as the generation prior because of just how bad a lot splurging on luxuries by many/most millennials can be. Lot of examples of that you guys bring up in the thread.

That's the main issue, I think. Let the idiots fuck up their own future, as has always been part of society, but give the more responsible ones some praise for applying themselves and not falling into the same traps. The broad swathe articles like these paint across millennials just makes people bitter and less likely to motivate themselves.

Crazy idea here: What if Avocado toast, if you get it, is just $3 for a small avocado, and $3-4 for a loaf of rye bread. The only idiots who spend the absurd prices for a "trendy" breakfast are the marxist-indoctorinated fuckwits. Meanwhile, the hardworking, focused people who are trying their best are actually barely scraping by with little hope for the future despite significant effort into working, and effective saving strategies.

Not a single person in this thread is arguing for or defending $10 hipster breakfasts.

Incompetence is one explanation for complaining about a lack of money. A shitty economy that doesn't reward hard work like it did for the previous generation is another. There can be a group of people dealing with these different situations and still having a superficially similar outcome.
>>
>>133343447
Yeah, I gotta agree with the Frenchie here. It's definitely divide & conquer, but it's also true.
They fucked over all following generations for their own benefit, and they are showing zero remorse for having done so.

>allow foreign investors to ravage the housing market because it means you can grab an extra 30-40% on your property that you kept as retirement fund
>rant about the following generations not being able to afford homes anymore as if it's entirely their fault and not also due to you intentionally making it extremely expensive for them

There are a couple of things that can be forgiven on the basis of "they just didn't foresee the consequences of it". But they also did a shitton of stuff they knew perfectly well would fuck over the next generations, just because they made a bit of profit on it.

That's one of the two big reasons, the other is globalization. People decided that instead of selling their country's (sometimes artificially) limited resources, like housing, only to people within their own country, they could get a significantly higher profit if they instead sold it to the upper class of the whole world.

From an economical perspective that makes sense, but from a social one they sold the future of their own children to foreign cultures.
And deep down they knew perfectly well that what they did was wrong. Ask any of them if they'd move into a primarily chink neighborhood for example. Even the lefties will come up with some lame excuse for why they wouldn't, yet they have no problem forcing that on the future generations for their own advantage.
>>
>>133345413
Nobody in my age range really goes out to eat, unless it's cheap pizza at a hangout. For the most part, it's microwave shit, 7-11, and pizza for millennials. They can't afford to go to regular restaurants, unless they're already well-off, such as Instagram girls with a sugar daddy.

He's referring to people who pay five or six dollars for a piece of avocado toast in a restaurant.

Ask the most marxism-infested libshit if he would move into a heavily diverse neighborhood and even they won't just say "yes". This is obviously about those asshats that go and buy them from the new hipster cafe that don't have anything on the menu that is cheaper than 7 bucks. Then add the coffee, extra something, they visit twice some days etc

A more realistic way of looking at it is 10 bucks a day wasted on average, suddenly you have saved about a whole month worth of pay during a year.

>>
>>133321738
it would work out if people actually cared about their kids.

The problem is that normal people don't consider the next generation, rich people on the other hand does.

And by that I mean that so many young people purposefully get big loans, spend on vacations and generally waste their resources.

I agree with you that things are worse than before but people are not helping by demanding to help dig their own graves, like most people do.
>>
>>133345413
Things like making food from scratch has limits, though. It's a lot cheaper, but it also has a time cost. Doing literally everything from the absolute basics is far too time-consuming. When you're already working full-time, running groceries, and spend 3 hours on the bus every day for commuting, you'll have to cut corners somewhere.

If you want to get anything remotely like a full night of rest, then you might not have time for a full breakfast, or a real home-made lunch. You might have to do things like add canned beans and rice or something to your lunch in order to make sure you get enough calories.

Taking up cooking as a hobby can help a lot with the logistics of home-made food, and will let you make things like granola bars that you can keep on you so that you can keep away distracting hunger during the day, or on your commute if you had to rush out that morning.
>>
>>133332862
ehh, there are plenty of cheap bars, its just that they are dirty and full of alcoholics and niggers, go to a really cheap area on the outside of a ghetto and you will quickly realize that they are not all expensive.

you just find those because you are around areas suited your economic situation, and that is that you should feel like you have a little less than you should and feel the need to buy yourself a little goodfeel
>>

so you think, until you realize that you spend an hour or two watching netflix or something equally unproductive that does not give you the same satisfaction that making real food would give you
