They'll let you know at what point you'd have to pay for a retainer or whatever, how much that might cost, and everything else. But at least you can get a better sense for where you're at and what your options might look like from people who know their way around the system.

I know a little about the legal system, and a supoena needs to be followed. You have to go to court.

There may be some options when you get there. Ask the DA or whoever is prosecuting, when they I you before taking the stand, if your written statement is enough. Sometimes they'll let that be enough. Another idea is ask to do a video deposition.

This works well if appearing in court would cause you a hardship. I used the wife's disabilities for jury duty once - they sent me walking after 10 minutes. And it was true, so that's why.

If you're concerned about your safety, bring that up before they prep you for the bench.
