I follow the Games, and I think this is an awful idea, as any city that wished to present itself as a candidate for 2028 will feel cheated out of these Games, and rightly so.

Paris will get them in 2024, as it shall mark 100 years since they last hosted the Games, which means Los Angeles will get them in 2028.

On the other hand, this does present a unique opportunity and invite the possibility of enormous overspend. Ordinarily, a given city is awarded the Games seven years before they're due to host. This is decided one year after a given Games. We, for example, were awarded the Olympics in 2005, the year after Athens hosted. For Los Angeles to be awarded them now would give them four extra years to prepare. These eleven years of planning invite the huge possibility of overspend, and I'll go out on a limb and say that these will be the most expensive Olympics to date.

In these eleven years, comprehensive rejuvenation of the city can be undertaken. Areas plagued with gangs will be addressed, like was attempted in Rio De Janiero. Underdeveloped areas of the city will be injected with capital and infrastructure. Huge new infrastructure projects could be considered for the city as a whole - an overhaul in public transport, new major roads, vast numbers of hotels, and with them, more service sector jobs. All of this will come at a huge price.

It's basically handing Los Angeles the greatest opportunity anyone has ever had in hosting the Olympics - some would say an unfair one. Everyone else gets seven years. What makes Los Angeles deserving of special treatment?
