They invaded in late June. That's a month before the hottest day of the year in the northern hemisphere on average, July 24th. If they had invaded in May, it would be too wet, same as in fall.

In Panzer Operations by Hermann Hoth, he mentions the soviets accidentally sent supplies after their towns were taken because they didn't have communications that they had been captured already, resulting in a more well equipped(with informal attire) German army. The regulations were subsequently relaxed in this campaign-which is why we always see pictures of soldiers with their blouses off or with soviet gloves,etc.

Also, look at the battles around Leningrad and around Stalingrad. The further north one looks, the better the Germans are doing. The Russians had higher attrition in winter than did the Germans.
