Keep in mind that in 1939, the Polish state only existed for 20 years since the late 18th century (!). Nonsense and postwar propaganda. Hitler wanted Danzig back in the Reich. That's what all this was about. Danzig had a 97% German population at the time. He was willing to guarantee the 1919 borders even though the plebiscites promised by Poland in the Treaty of Versailles never happened.

If Marshall Pilsudski hadn't died, Poland would have been aligned with Germany against Soviet Russia. Anybody who was not an idiot and who could read a map knew that the British-French guarantee was worthless.

That is the only way to fight a war. These wars like Vietnam, Afghanistan(Russia and USA), Iraq etc.
All of which could have been ended in a year or two with less lose of life if the bigger power just killed everything that did not surrender when asked. You don't have to shoot prisoners if fact that is counter productive. But blowing a town to bits is much more effective than making people angry by busting down their doors.
