People like to keep one foot on solid ground of stuff they already know, and one foot exploring unsteady ground of new ideas.

If you push entirely new ideas on somebody that don't fit into their current thinking, they are likely to reject everything you say. One has to introduce new ideas gradually in a way that somebody can understand given their current thought.

Radical ideological shifts don't happen in a day, it's more death by a thousand cuts to their old way of thinking, followed by a bunch of ideas they've heard over time all snapping into place at once. Giving up old conceptions makes people feel stupid, they don't like doing it. Even if you're on board with fascism, there are reasons to hate Hitler like his agressive warring, so it's generally a bad place to start if you want to promote an idea to people.

At the same time I say this, you do need to slam the door in peoples face a little and shock them out of their current line of thought. Just feed them more ideas that they can incorporate into their current thinking, and a few door in the face factoids. In regards to Hitler, I think a good place to start is talking about the more corrupt less noble reasons the allies went to war with them, such as supporting their bankers. Once you strip away the illusion that the west goes to war for "freedom" and "spreading democracy", you can push more controversial concepts.

Also, in general, people HATE being told what to think. Give them access to new information. Expose them to new sources of information, and let them draw their own conclusions. Don't draw conclusions for them.

People I've found over time, went from completely avoiding talking to me about politics to asking me questions about it, and what I always do is try to simply talk about the facts I do while avoiding as much as possible inserting an opinion of my own. I might present the facts in a bias manner, but I'll let people draw their own conclusions. This tends to work well for controversial stuff in particular because it's harder to get angry at somebody for bringing up facts that lead to a controversial conclusion, than it is to get angry at them for having a controversial opinion.

I'm also knowledgeable about world politics, I know a lot of just hard political facts like who various world leaders are and the big political happenings in the world, and people seem to think I'm fairly smart in regards to that sort of thing. There is a friend I have who rants about Islam, and while I agreed with their opinion, they got so many basic facts wrong, that I stopped talking to them. It simply wasn't worth my time listening to somebody who knew less than me, people want to feel they're learning something. Just be well informed, give people facts, and let people draw their own conclusions, and they will be interested in talking to you, even if they don't completely agree with you.
