Even still, I thought Japan was majority buddhist/shinto, or at least one of those were their primary religion.

Atheist, buddhism is just for some traditions like we have with Christmas (celebrating but not really christian)

Christmas is a celebration of Odin's Wild Hunt.

This.
Remember that shintoists, habitually praying their gods and attending their ceremony, almost all nips, don't like to describe themselves "religious".
In Japanese, the term "religion" (宗教) itself has something western and eccentric connotation. And the imperial government had heavily propagated the idea that "shinto is not religion."
10% of Japan is Christian? I had no idea it was so widespread.
When I asked my Jap friend about religion he told me he didn't believe in god, then when I asked him what happens after you die, he said he believes in reincarnation.
