OP, if you want a real argument, just point out the actions of the religions founder. Point out that it is meaningless to point at one thing or another that someone has justified with a religion, people will justify their actions with whatever is convenient. To see the essence of a religion you must look at its founders. When ever a religion experiences a movement to 'return to its roots' people inevitably try to mimic the early religion. For bhuddists this might involve sitting under trees, for christians this might involve living in secluded communes, for muslims this involves rape, conquest, and murder.

Just push that, again and again, you judge a religion by the actions of its founders, anything else is simple convenient justification by people using religion as a political tool after the fact. Those who follow the ways of their founders are doing it correctly, those who arent are heretics. 'radical' islamicists are in fact properly practicing muslims (i am not versed in the finer theological points of islam, it could well be that they are beheading improperly or something such as that. Their overall effect and impact is consistent with the religions foundational ideas, however)
