Oh the union prison camps by far were worse if only because they didn't have the excuse of being under supplied and over filled like the southern prisons. That said a soldier's experiences in Andersonville heavily depending on what Confederate regiment captured them and if the Confederates honored their end of the deal in the terms of surrender. Forrest for example didn't and allowed his men to rob Tennessee unionist regiments he captured to the point where by the time they reached Andersonville they were practically naked with none of their personal belongings or money and were forced to dine like animals and bury themselves for warmth. Other union regiments sent to Andersonville however did really well since they got to keep their uniforms, clothes, paychecks, kitchen supplies, and other items excluding military arms.

The issue was more the Confederacy wanted to return to prisoner swapping but the Union stopped the practice because they realized Confederate prisoners were just going back to the front lines and dragging the war out. Many of the men from the regiment that several of my ancestors served in were either released from Andersonville or escaped and the Union Army fed them, gave them medical care if needed, and let them return to the line if they could. I did. Family served almost exclusively as cavalrymen from what I've seen. The unionists in the family joined local Union regiments while the Confederates in the family signed up with Forrest it seems. This is really common in Tennessee honestly. We were extremely split over the secession issue and weren't as united to the CSA's cause as the states further south. It makes for interesting stories though, especially post war when the Confederates and Unionists had to try to figure out how to live together again. I know in my county two brothers lived together to old age despite serving opposite sides in the war.

Interesting to note ... Henry Morton Stanley, served with the Arkansas Volunteer Infantry. He was recruited after arriving in New Orleans on passage from England. He was captured at Shiloh, switched allegiances to the union, then later deserted the union army. He went on to fame, with the famous utterance, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"

Tbh it's always been my belief that if the Confederate States had triumphed and emerged an independent nation, both North and South would've been plagued with a low-level border war afterward. Much in the way Northern Ireland is torn between staying in the UK or joining the Republic of Ireland.

Whether this would lead to a reconciliation between the Confederate and United States in that they have to work together to resolve the issue or simply drive an even deeper wedge between them is a matter of debate.

I know in this county Confederates became dependent on the Unionists because after the war many in the county were in poverty and the only ones getting any kind of income were the Unionists drawing pensions and spending that money in stores run by Confederate veterans. Luckily though at least in my area both sides did quickly find common ground through things like stopping the rampant crime problem caused by bushwhackers who decided to just become bandits. It also helped one unionist brevet general actually went on to become a Congressman and demanded aid for both sides despite fears Forrest had that he might discriminate against the Confederate veterans due to these veterans sending the unionists to Andersonville. It's a pretty cool and sadly mostly untold story. I wouldn't even know about it if it wasn't for the books I've found on the topic.

Well I don't there'd be reunification per se because the cultural differences between North and South would've grown too wide to really bridge (Germany had immense difficulties uniting despite only having been apart for 40 years). Especially given the fact that the South's independence would've been only won through hard fighting, there would have been many Southerners would have found the idea offensive (just as many Americans find the idea of rejoining the UK ridiculous if not outright treasonous).

I think there would have eventually been normalization of relations between the two though. Maybe after a struggle where the United and Confederate States face a common enemy such as the World Wars (assuming they still occur).

From what I understand, Mormons were split on whether or not to side with North or South. On one hand, they found slavery abhorrent (that was a major factor in their expulsion from Missouri), on the other, they were pretty much being threatened with genocide at the hands of the United States (that was pretty much only avoided by Civil War).

Brigham Young had CSA sympathies but he was pragmatic. Lincoln sent him a letter saying if the Mormons allied the CSA Lincoln would make sure Mormonism was made extinct. So Brigham instead tried to play up the idea of Mormons were super loyal to the union to try to gain statehood but that also failed since the union made it clear they thought polygamy was the second most disgusting practice after slavery. At the same time Young hated the US for the death of Joseph Smith and told the Mormons not to support either side but individual Mormons did end up feeling sympathies to the states they were born in and took off to fight for both sides. It's a neat little bit to the Civil War story.
