Western MA varies alot. If you look at the map as a whole its mostly liberal
But here is generally what you will see:

The Northern area has williams college which is super liberal (may be good place to oppose views) but the land around is pretty industrial and is really cheap, kind of a shithole

The central is pretty liberal, its the most suburban area although it has defense contractors who are pretty conservative there is alot of polarization here but its all strangely mixed
The lower county is always either pretty wealthy or pretty "homey/for "down to heart liberals"and pretty cool but its also very liberal with attractions like Tanglewood but there are places

Surrounding the major areas there are a few strongholds of conservatism (and also a few strongholds of heroin)-jk

To get to the point of the OP though: I'm heading off to grad school to major in politics and journalism, aiming to try to intern at a right wing journal or something after I'm done, hopefully end up in a think tank somewhere in NE. My dream is to convert NE to a conservative paradise before I die; I don't understand why the birthplace of freedom in this country should give itself over to communism so easily. I work outside the cities, in rural parts of RI and MA, and it always surprises me how conservative folks are there. MA definitely will be a tough nut though, since politics is largely a question of social/identity issues for them. I don't think they could care less about economic questions. But that's where we need to strike. Most people are level-headed and when you talk to them one-on-one about taxes and government waste, many older generation NE democrats/liberals show their true conservative colors.
