I can't really compare to Britain, but I think we tend to have much bigger populations of specific races or nationalities that stick together and make their own American version of their heritage. For example, many cities have Chinatowns, Irish areas, Italian areas, etc. As a result, we tend to have both pride in our ethnic heritage and our heritage as Americans. When everyone was Christian, this wasn't such a problem, but as we've taken in more and more divergent cultures, this has led to a general fracturing of the American side of the identity, so people start to identify more with their other heritage, or just as a black, white, Muslim, etc.

Marxism and postmodernism. SJWs are taught in college to judge people by their race and never by their character, it is "colorblind" and "racist" to ignore race. The entire field of sociology is centered around categorizing people into group identities and assigning privilege and victimhood to groups as a whole and judging their worth of opinion by their level of victimhood. The problem with this point is that (to me) it doesn't seem that it's a divide on strictly cultural/values lines. For example, a multitude of different national heritages exist amongst blacks and Asians exist in America, yet they are often grouped together.
I couldn't say which race this is most obvious with, but I'm sure you know what I mean.
