You're right, the problem lies in scale or at least the symbolic effects. Everyone in Europe were about to royally screw about anyone else, yes, but we actually lost our country and not only once due to that screwing - sometimes by those we considered allies. Fact is, Danzig was founded in 1224 (there was no city there before), by Zwantepolc de Danceke, under german law (lübisches Stadtrecht), as it was populated by german traders. Then in 1295, polish king Przemyslaw again recognised them - again under german law (magdeburger stadtrecht).
So from the beginning, Danzig was recognized by polish lords and kings as a german city on on polish ground.
