The US excels at symmetric warfare, but has historically struggled with fighting against weaker opponents because we hamstring ourselves for political reasons (such as reducing civilian casualties or preserving cultural artifacts.)

If the goal was to obliterate everyone and everything in the conflict zone, America is utterly unrivaled. The destructive force of the American military is immense.

The issue is that this vast war machine is trying to isolate and attack enemies that can melt back into civilian populations at any time. This was the case in Vietnam, and has been the case in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is also the same problem faced in Syria and other middle-east shithole conflicts. You can't kill the enemy until you expose him somehow.

Basically, Rules of Engagement hamstring the whole process. Particularly in the case of Afghanistan, I'd say just glass every fucking village and be done with it. They're all complicit and we all know it.
