Should it be raised? Abolished? State by state?

Will it hasten automation? Will low skill workers have 0 opportunities in a couple of decades?

>Should it be raised?
Probably not.

>Abolished?
Definitely not.

>State by state?
Absolutely yes.

>Will it hasten automation?
That will develop independently of minimum wage issues.

>Will low skill workers have 0 opportunities in a couple of decades?
They will have increasingly fewer opportunities, but I think 0 within 20 years is a bit ambitious of an estimate..
>>
>>133032003
It's economics. It will have positive and negative consequences.
>Positive
More purchasing power will grow the economy
People will use less on public programs like welfare (look up the welfare loop WalMart has created
Poverty is postively correlated with crime so less poverty will reduce crime
>Negatives
Higher unemployment rate
Higher investment in automation (which is happening regardless)
Lower corporate profits

I personally agree with pegging the minimum wage with inflation but there are good and bad things about it
>>
>>133032003
Not even state by state, but city by city even. Live in urban NC a $725 minimum is not enough to support even one person in the city. Lived in rural NC 4 yrs ago and it was definitely feasible.
>>
>>133032531
>>Should it be raised?
>Probably not
Why though? Don't most economists agree that it should be increased?
>>
>>133033141
>725
oops. 7.25
>>
>>133032003
Theres no point addressig the minimum wage issue until we tackle illegal immigration destroying the value of labor.
>>
the minimum wage shouldn't be forcibly raised... it actually hurts many low income workers.... supply and demand curves anons... also, if u really want to raise it, get rid of the illegals. Don't give me the shit that they do jobs no one else wants to do... starve a man enough and he will do any shit for food
>>
>>133032003
>raise it to 15/hr
>companies fire people + speed up automation
>leftists think this is a good idea
Fucking retards.
The technocrats are pushing this just as an excuse to automate faster. Look at what Soros is doing.
>>
>>133033230

Unions are what are really killing us. You're all over-paid self-righteous assholes who think 16 weeks of school should qualify you to make the same wages as a fucking doctor
>>
>>133033935
Because it has been years and we haven't fixed either of them and half of Americans (the left) think we can raise the minimum wage without addressing illegal immigration. Moreover, addressing the illegal immigration issue would help make solving the minimum wage issue easier because it's one of the biggest reasons labor is so devalued as it is.
>>
>>133032003
As a machine operator, let me tell you something about robots. They're fucking retarded. Every part that moves through the operations to get cut and burned a certain way is picked up by a robot when the part hits the sensor. If a sensor is fucked up, the robot won't pick it up, which causes the line to back up and fuck with other robots and machines. Speaking of machines, they need constant maintenence. New coils for induction hardening, new inserts to cut metal parts when they wear out, oil, changed over to run new parts, and offsets need to be made to keep the part sizes within tolerance. Chips get built up inside the machines, which wil cause the robot to not set the parts down correctly and cause them to crash. Machining jobs are not going anywhere anytime soon because of automation. If anything, it's bringing in more jobs to counter the fuck ups.

>Lower corporate profits
This statement pisses me off (not you, don't worry) because corporations don't need insane levels of profit. Yes a business has a right to do as well as it can WITHIN REASON. But they managed to worm their way into the idea that if they are stymied one iota in making a profit, that it's communism and the worst thing since the Holocaust. They have so much control, though, that they get to hike prices and fuck over the whole system just so they can maintain those profits that benefit absolutely no one else.
>>
>>133034404
Unionized workers themselves aren't a big issue, because at lease they aren't useless eaters. The union bosses and such however have become nothing but useless eaters, that no longer even do much in terms o protecting workers, and the wage increases are often dwarfed by the union fees, they're hardly more than additional bureaucrats handing out more useless "official" approved stamps and getting a shittone of money for it, which in the end comes out of the laborer's pockets.

I think it should be raised.

Minimum wage use to be pegged at roughly 80% of the GDP per capita. It rose with inflation accordingly. Then it stopped. Minimum wage use to be a living wage - you weren't living in total comfort, but you could still live (meaning able to afford to recreate, own a home, car, etc). Now you can barely afford a shitty apartment on minimum wage working 40hrs/week - and most minimum wage earners are lucky to get anywhere NEAR 40hrs. Any car these people own is going to be a piece of shit. Health insurance is not an option (see: full-time vs. part-time), so medical expenses come out of pocket and are full price.

This, I have worked for a union and while the people on the field work their asses off, people on the corporate side rarely do anything and are simply there to fill a role that does nothing.

After working 10ish years or so we make about $50/hr, but you have to remember that work isn't always constant with jobs, especially if you're into labor.

>>133039048

I think your image of what qualifies as a "liberal job" is ridiculously skewed. Pretty much all of my friends out of high school started out bussing tables or some menial line of work to start their working life, no one stays in a position like that for longer than a year or two at most. If people want to be retarded and burn their post-years of schooling on something they could learn in their free time then let them waste their money, but don't go shutting the door on young kids looking for an entry-level job that helps pay for school

>>133032003
Abolished.

Wages cannot logically be more than the utility of the labor. To increase the actual value of wages, you either need to reduce the amount of wage-labor available, or you need to increase the utility provided by wage laborers.

So, no matter how you raise the minimum wage, the actual number becomes arbitrary as businesses will adjust to this wage floor while the value of wages remains stagnant.

>But I want to increase the value of wages using the big dick of the government!
Then legally limit the amount of hours one worker can work in a week, raise the minimum working age, lower the retirement age, and restriction immigration for low end labor.

>I want to raise the value of wages without using the big dick of the government!
Then encourage family values that will drag women and the elderly out of the work force and life-work balances that will make workers unwilling to work more hours.
>>
>>133032003
>Minimum wage
Minimum wage shouldn't exist, the markets should decide how much a given employee is worth.
>inb4 "muh living wage"
No one is entitled to anything, those who do not have skills valuable enough to keep themselves fed and sheltered should either get better skills or be left to rot; this also applies to automation, get a skill that is hard to automate.

Electricians are decent if you're not a big guy.
Plumbers and HVAC always have work. Someone always needs a shitter fixed or their a/c or furnace "looked at."

Electricians have the easiest job.

And since you mimwage increase shills are too pussy to read the article, here are the fine points:

– The numbers of hours worked by low-wage workers fell by *3.5 million hours per quarter*. This was reflected both in thousands of job losses and reductions in hours worked by those who retained their jobs.

– The losses were so dramatic that this increase “reduced income paid to low-wage employees of single-location Seattle businesses by roughly $120 million on an annual basis.” On average, low-wage workers *lost* $125 per month. The minimum wage has always been a lousy income transfer program, but at this level you’d come out ahead just setting a hundred million dollars a year on fire. And that’s before we get into who kept vs lost their jobs.

– You may also hear that the construction of the comparison group was flawed somehow, and that’s driving the results. I believe that the research team did as good of a job as possible, trying several approaches and presenting all of their findings extensively. There is no cherry-picking here. But more importantly, without getting too deep into the econometric weeds, my sense is that, given the evolution of the Seattle economy over the past two years, these results – if anything – *understate* the extent of the job losses.

it depends on what kinds of trucks.
If you drive freight with an 18 wheeler cross country, you get paid a lot more (that Class A CDL, though). If you drive box trucks (two axle, 26-32ft) you get paid less due to being limited to in state only, and no CDL requirements.

To get started, buy yourself a decent box truck (I like the sterling L7500 model personally). Then go find a decent moving company to work for as an OO/contractor. You can make 6 figures doing that too, with no CDL. However it is a very physical job moving furniture and appliances 8-15 hours per day. But you'll end up making 300-500 per day, 6 days a week in the summer months.

Tough nut to crack with the cranes.
Op Eng push dirt too. Not as much money in that but it might be fun driving the Tonka trucks around and playing in the dirt.
Where ever you are, google: "operating engineers + your city" to find out what's going on and how to do it.
And those cranes, think 12 hours a day, 1000 feet in the air and never coming down until your shift is over. Yes, there's a bucket.
It might be 65-125 an hour though.

You have it ass backwards. The Berkley study came out first.

Seattle's high minimum wage hasn't cost jobs, study finds
http://www.king5.com/news/local/seattles-high-minimum-wage-hasnt-cost-jobs-study-finds/450850532

Then the corporate shills had to do damage control because there's nothing they hate more than booming wages and 2.5% unemployment so they came up with an absurd study that has been debunked.

Leave it up to the right wing retard corporate shills of (((pol))) to argue that higher wages and lower unemployment is a bad thing.

Because the city wanted that one to be paid attention to and not the one they commissioned several years prior that released a result they didn't agree with. Better to have the Berkley study that uses a tiny sample size and missing variables so you can continue to pander to the people that put you in office.

They only looked at a few small mom and pop restaurants.

It was the most flawed study of all time. >>133050784

Minimum wage laws were actually used to keep black people from getting jobs created in the booming economy in the 1920s that had been in the north in the 1930s with the Davis-Bacon Act. They were used during the Apartheid era to put black people on an equal playing field to make an excuse to hire more white workers. They were even contemplating using minimum wage laws to undermine working Chinese immigrants early in the 20th century. That explains why the unemployment rate for the black youth is high.

http://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-0405-leonard-minimum-wage-20160405-story.html

Also, working at McDonalds isn't supposed to be a career. It's supposed to help you save some money to get a career. It's a foundation.

Also, if the minimum wage increases, don't be surprised when you lose your job. Last year, when UC Berkely touted and got the minimum wage, they fired hundreds of staff.

http://www.investors.com/politics/editorials/uc-berkeley-touts-15-minimum-wage-then-fires-hundreds-of-workers-after-it-passes/

In Seattle, local restaurants had to cut jobs because of the minimum wage increase.

Workers and clerks are being replaced with automatons and kiosks in states like California, Florida and others. At my local AMC theatre, they're used to be seven clerks printing out movie tickets for customers. Now, there's only one clerk for pre-ordered tickets, and the rest are kiosks that the customer can order on themselves.

>Unionized workers themselves aren't a big issue
You actually misunderstand union workers totally.

Yes we are a problem. If you fuck with us, we will shut down. Our bosses don't mean shit in the equation. It is really simple. I am getting paid WAY more, and better trained and am treated to a retirement through a union hall vs competing rat outfits. I as a worker decide on my own if I choose to associate and organize. If others do the same, than you have a union. You can pretend to understand the dynamics of organized labor, but at the end of the day Union labor continues to be a part of the workforce for a very good reason. We are paid well because we are very specialized. We also don't go to the same office 8 minutes from home every day for the rest of our lives. We drive all over our "territory" which can be as large as a state....I consider my territory the US, Canada....though Id never go to leaf land.
