They absolutely were, which is why American history in US schools generally glosses over the revolution, fast forwards to 'muh slaves' and the civil war, and then quickly moves to the early 20th century progressive/big government regimes (Wilson, FDR, etc.), depression, WW2. The goal is to indoctrinate you into loving big government, hating states rights, white people are bad, etc. The teaching of US history is completely one-sided.

Anyone who reads and understands the philosophy of our founding, the words of our forefathers, the debates surrounding the construction of the federal government (federalist papers), will quickly understand how skeptical our founders were of a powerful government. So skeptical they almost didn't form it in the first place. That's not what they wanted.

In order to understand why /pol/ doesn't like civic nationalism you have to adopt a mindset thats based in the distant future and have an understanding of what a nation is.

The first idea of a nation is land claimed by a tribe, a tribes territory if you will. A tribe is bit more personal than simply a race, it's the culture of "a people" and due to human biology this would obviously mean a tribe would be close knit genetically. The genetics aspect is an important bit though, because humanity diversified through natural selection between sexual selection and the environment. White people are lighter because the european climate requires it. Sub-Saharan are black because their environment requires it. But I digress on that part, the point is that a nation is the lands of tribe whether that tribes distinction is a certain religion, tradition, anything where they can divide themselves from other people and compete with other people. It is identity at its core.

A nation is not a collection of people walled together with a thin slice political process like democracy (Something I hear britbongs spew in their debates a lot).

The reason civic nationalism does not work is it pairs together people of different tribes into a direct competition of supremacy over the land. /pol/ can't trust human nature to even maintain those tribal lines. Either one dominates the other or the merge into something completely new (I.E Mexico).

This is a slow process, most people can hardly process it or care to believe it would happen since it takes generations to actually see. But you realize the flaw when you ask "Will the children of my children of my children have any semblance of resemblance to me? Will they hold my tradition and value?"

When you start thinking in those long terms, you don't see that happening in a nation that exists as a thinly pasted together coalition of tribes.
