Yesterday I had a few drinks with a friend of mine and we sat in a bar with some other dudes. Especially when you consider that it's not a doctrinal issue, and it seems to work well for our brothers in the Eastern Orthodox and high Anglican traditions (I won't get into the proddie). First off, the statistics show that priests are no more or less likely than to abuse children than the general population. The rate of sexual abuse that went on in the 60's and 70's within Catholic institutions is nearly exactly the same as the rates in secular child care organizations.

And secondly, you don't have the right view of celibacy. Because your sexuality isn't integrated, and it is an outside need, that leads you to cheat on your spouse and the marriage breaks down. Or what if your lustful desires lead you to be attracted to people other than your spouse? Your spouse becomes boring and can't fulfill this "need" anymore and you get divorced.

Celibacy is part of chastity. If you can't understand celibacy, or how people could do it, or how it is even possible, then it's a sign that you would not only make a poor priest or monastic, but also a poor husband or wife.

Celibacy is important. If we remove it, it is just legitimizing the broken view of sex.
