The conventional wisdom has calcified: Donald Trump is going to lose to Hillary Clinton.

Sure, there have been brief moments when the outcome seemed in doubt — when the FBI director called Clinton's handling of her emails while secretary of state "extremely careless"; when it looked for about a half-hour that Trump received a significant bump from the GOP convention. But for the most part, and especially in the month since the conclusion of the Democratic convention, the race has settled into a stable pattern, with Clinton running between 4 and 8 points ahead of Trump nationally and beating him in most, if not all, of the so-called swing states. Hence the conventional wisdom: Trump will lose.

But the conventional wisdom is wrong. Trump isn't merely going to lose. He's going to lose in the biggest popular vote landslide in modern presidential history.

Democrat George McGovern finished with 37.5 percent in his 1972 race against Richard Nixon, the lowest tally for a major party nominee in a two-person race since Republican Alf Landon pulled in 36.5 percent against FDR in 1936. (George H.W. Bush managed to win 37.4 percent in his 1992 contest against Bill Clinton and Ross Perot, with the latter coming in at 18.9 percent of the vote.) Trump is now on track to challenge all of these results. It's not crazy to think he'll finish with less than 35 percent of the popular vote.

The electoral map will be different. Trump will lose there, too — though unlike McGovern, who pulled in only 17 electoral votes, Trump is pretty much guaranteed a triple-digit tally of electoral votes thanks to overwhelming Republican dominance of states in the South, Midwest, and Intermountain West. The GOP could nominate a turnip and still win the South.

But the popular vote will tell the democratic truth: Trump may well end up being the most unpopular candidate from a major party since before the New Deal.

Donald Trump will not, cannot, win the general election for U.S president.

It's time for the media to stop pretending otherwise in order to live off of Trump click bait.

There are three principal reasons why Trump cannot win. But let's start with the second most important, which is the one where most people start -- that Trump was written off in the primaries before, so he shouldn't be written off in the general election.

This is worse than an apples to oranges comparison; it's just plain lazy thinking.

That Trump was able to rally 11 to 12 million voters in a small-scale, homogenous contest was a small surprise. But this says nothing about his ability to rally the 65 or so million needed to win a general election.

Or put it this way: just because your team beats all odds to win the neighbourhood beer hockey league doesn't mean that it stands a chance of surprising the experts a second time to take the Stanley Cup.

So far Trump has managed to win over only a subset of Republican primary voters, who are in turn a subset of registered Republicans (not all registered GOP voters bother with the primaries), which in turn are a subset of likely GOP general electorate voters consisting of GOP-leaning independents and Democrats, which in turn are a subset of the general election.

What are local politics like in your state?

/South Dakota/ here. Solid Red state, and the Democrats don't even think they stand a chance here, so the Republican primaries are going to be the actual elections. We won't even get anything in from other media markets, unless the Democrats are deluded enough to think they can challenge Steve King in Iowa.

Pic related is our current House Representative, Kristi Noem. She's retiring to run for Governor, so there will be an open house election as well.

I'll probably end up voting for her as governor, since the other guy running, Jackley, has ties with the Bush administration. Noem's worked hard in DC (she's surprisingly high energy), so I guess its fair to reward her representation of the state.

As for the House election, I'm voting for Dusty Johnson, because the other candidate, Krebs, refused to cooperate with the voter fraud probe led by Kobach. Johnson's also stood up for local broadband service providers, which is pretty fucking critical for a state like this one.

The latest model shows for the fourth straight month that the Democratic nominee will win 332 electoral votes, compared with 206 for the Republican nominee. The model chooses a party, not a candidate, to win.
“The closer we come to election day, the more that two-year change is based in history and less on our economic forecasts,” said Dan White, a Moody’s economist who oversees the monthly model.

“With just over four months left to election day, the chances of an economic forecast error distorting the results are fading,” he said.

“This ups the confidence level in the model’s results, though forecast risks are always present, especially when it comes to politics.”

Moody's bases its forecast on a two-year change of the economic variables, from the third quarter of 2014 to the third quarter of this year.

A slight increase in gasoline prices modestly improved Republican chances, but that shift was offset in part by higher incomes, house prices and President Obama’s rising approval rating.

The latest Gallup poll shows the president’s approval at 52 percent, up a point from last month.
