I just want to remind everyone: the white settlers in the US weren't immigrants. You can't emigrate to a nation that doesn't exist.

The natives hadn't marked off or made improvements to the land. They had no real concept of property rights, actually, nor a tradition of common law. There was no nation to emigrate to.

Once an actual state was constructed by Europeans, is it any wonder why they'd want the best and most compatible immigrants possible? And they were/are completely within their legal and ethical right to deny entry to anyone for any reason. They settled the continent and created order out of chaos.
