Trump is not acting retarded at all--actually his Twitter strategy is by a significant margin the most effective behavior he has adopted as president. Whenever Trump is about to do something controversial or that might lose him actual political capital, he simply tweets something offensive or reminds people about Hillary Clinton. This draws attention away from his actions and towards either the perceived stupidity of his opponents, or better still to Hillary Clinton whose loathsomeness as a candidate got him elected. By reminding people constantly of the odious nature of Clinton he presents himself as being constantly on the offensive even when he is under fire from all sides, which has allowed him to simply escape actual punishment for his bolder actions.

The action is entirely pragmatic and very effective. Most people have not yet discovered this, but the Democratic Party is in freefall as a result and will not recover.

This is why an intellectual core is important in any movement, as a way to apply criticism from within rather than from without.
