Not really. The Republican Party had two branches. Lincoln and Grant were part of the more conservative branch. They were fine with keeping slavery as long as the union was preserved. The abolitionists were what's known as radical Republicans who made up the other branch. They were the ones Lincoln was constantly having to keep in check. The reason why Lincoln won though was because the Democratic Party split itself over two candidates so Lincoln was able to win even despite not being on many southern ballots. Same issue is why Wilson beat Taft and Roosevelt years later.

I always wondered what Anne would have thought of the battle flag. Seeing as she would've had very little in the way of any education on American history, she would've been neutral on it. I would tend to agree, except that I think some governments fit some societies better than others. Natsoc works for industrialized countries, but the south was very agriculture based (and still is), and also VERY independent minded. Family/clan was the building block of the south, but not immediate as much as large bloodlines with hundreds of people with fierce loyalties. Ever heard of the Hatfields and the McCoys?
