-People are fleeing the state in droves despite the tech industry's expansion because the retarded taxation scheme makes it utterly unaffordable to live in the places where one might be able to benefit from that industry.

-Aside from Silicon Valley California doesn't actually produce anything at a profit. The agriculture industry is heavily subsidized--meaning that it's actually a net loss that the government tolerates because it employs people. California cannot survive without massive subsidies.

-California has a colossal pensioner problem that is statistically guaranteed to destroy the state government by 2030. They already cannot pay what they owe and they're going to owe another 50 billion dollars a year within the decade.

I good book about a state seceding is Republic, by Charles Sheehan-Miles. It is about North Virginia seceding. It's realistic. Not a heroic tale of people overthrowing the government. The author is a former tanker in the US army, so the short battle scene at the end is pretty well done.
