Interesting that you say that. I wrote a paper for my Holocaust graduate course when I was abroad. The number really is something like 14 million, but that's a low ball. The amount of Slavs killed is incredibly high. The amount to Jewish dead has actually always been under 6 million (like 5,300,000 to 5,700,000), but 6 million sounds better. More marketable.
The biggest problem is that the east was largely unreported in the West due to: 1) the Cold War, since we couldn't have sympathy for our current enemies. 2) the amount of diaspora (polish, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Russian, Germans, et cetera), and the amount of people dragged off the gulags. And 3) how the Holocaust needed to be Jewish in order to promote the formation is Israel. If this genocide were simply a normal genocide (as normal as those can be), a homeland for the Jews would be out of the question. Really. Look at how much they went after Nazis for crimes against Jews, but always ignoring Russians, Poles, Roma, Serbs, and many more
