If anything, the first manned mission should be a team of one American, one Russian, one European and one Chinese, and they should make sure they all set their foot at the same time on Mars.

Ok first of all the atmosphere does very little to protect us from solar radiation. The most important factor is Earth's magnetic field that Mars lacks (or at least it's much weaker than Earth's). Second of all do you really think that the scientists and engineers working on Mars colonisation haven't considered that? There are lots of proposed solutions and eventually the radiation problem will be overcome.
