>>132851647
Honestly it is shit. It's well done but at the end of the day it's self-serving, which is why it is shitty. All of the grandest works of art in the world were homages to and attempts at mimicking the grand and awe-inspiring magnificence of God, and therefore become awe-inspiring to mortal men specifically for that reason. If you make something to appease your fellow man it will not have such grand potential as if you make something to appease your God which will thus compel it to be so much more magnificent and glorifying on the strength of attempting to create something that will please someone greater than any man.

If you can't understand it in these terms, change man to plebeian and God to king and pretend you were living in the monarchy. If you want to impress your neighbor you won't have to work as hard as to impress your king. But something so powerful as to impress the king should more than impress all of your fellow men.

Artists have lost touch with God, and the product of their labor suffers for it. What brilliant work of nu-architecture really compares to the majesty of St. Peter's Basilica?

You are all retarded.
1. The art from the past that survives is much more more likely to be the elite and best art of that time. There is a selection process whereby you see a distorted image of the past due to the mediocre and shit being more likely to perish with time (no preservation).
2. The barriers to entry for being called an "artist" are so massive now that the sheer volume of artists on earth right now is unparalleled in human history.
3. There is an implicit presupposition that Art has only one genre. This is obviously not the case in music, so why are you expecting it to be the case in Art? Even "Classical" music has many genres and artists which differ from each other so much that it would be absurd to say "I like classical music" when there are many classical pieces that are unbearable for me, while many which I love.
4. Most of you haven't even looked at any contemporary art so stop talking out of your asses.

We became 50% white BECAUSE we forgot the past. Our European roots. We focused too much on the present instead of looking to the past for guidance, i.e. has allowing hoards of barbarians ever been good for the host nation.

The West became so great in the first place because of the Renaissance (revival, remembering the glorious Roman past). We need to repeat that if any of our nations will make it.

Went to some known modern art gallery in LA, wanted to see for myself if I might be wrong about it being shit.

The first painting I saw was some sort of arbitrary doodle that sort of looked like the work of a parapeligic dude trying to draw a dick and gave up on the 3r'd attempt. This went on for quite some time and it became clear that the works that were put on display generally had the common themes of either bringing up slavery, gender, race or simply meaningless shapes.

It's was funny to see the description of these paintings and sculptures where they explained what they meant, since it was mostly impossible to determine on your own what the point of it all actually was.

Some things were pretty cool though, but I never once felt it was deep or insightful to watch any of it, because you might as well go to tumblr to get more or less the same experience the "statements" the "artworks" tried to convey

That is a good question. What's your answer?

Conversely, I'm rarely actually moved by pre-modern, by naturalistic art. It can be very interesting to look at, and the craftsmanship is impressive. But truly moved?

Look at her. She's pretty. Maybe you wanna fuck her. But, does a girl, standing in a seashell being pretty and you wanting to fuck her, move you in an aesthetic sense? Not in the sense of "it's pretty, it gives me nice feelings". In the same sense that Beethoven is aesthetic: it can be soul-crushingly depressing, but still aesthetic. That's what Rothko is.

Maybe you know the symbolism. Who is the lady, what's the seashell's doing, and what does that say about Italy? But still, if you know that, is that moving? Is it aesthetic?

And I'm not dissing this kind of art, some of it is very good. But it's not good because it's naturalistic depictions of pretty things.

Try going to a museum for a chance, let go of your preconceptions, and just try to admire a Rothko for what it is. Let it affect you for 10 minutes or so. Actively look at it: move closer, move further away. Examine the texture. Realize how overwhelming the impression of superrealistic color is. Engage with it.

I have been to many a art museums. And modern art in general is a shit, especially the post modernist style. Unless you suffer from vertigo I don't really understand how it can make you feel anything but boredom, might be because many a times in my life I got to stare at dilapidated walls and the sorts, might be because it's shit. Then again I should also state that to me both sculptures and paintings don't make me feel much most of the times. Exception being some of Ivan Aivazovsky works.

Generally only Architecture and Literature got something out of me, and it was never postmodern Architecture or Literature.

Some modernists hate beauty (although Rothko isn't a modernist). However, I think you're confusing beauty in the sense of "something that would be pleasant to look at IRL, painted in a naturalistic way" and "beauty".
Ugly things can be beautiful. Look at this picture. It's Saturn eating his children. Why didn't he draw a pretty flower instead?

Most modern art is shit. I was in a modern art museum this week, and I wasn't impressed. And I actually like good modern art. But the entire art world is so far up its own ass that they seemingly only produce quality by accident. This museum gave you a little guide that explained every work of art. Or "art", as was the case with most of them. But good art does not require that the viewer be nudged in the right direction of reasoning by a viewing guide.

One of the "works" was just a video of a Mexican "artist" throwing books in the air and shooting them with a shotgun. The guide said something about this bringing him into closer contact with the books, or freeing the concepts of them, or whatever. Just some snooty shit to elevate a dude having some redneck fun to the level of modern art.

And that's just the problem, as if the problem with our societies at large: Rampant relativism. Constant self-indulgent, dadaistic introspection about "what is truly art". But we know. We know what art is. We have museums full of it. Or endless abstrations, like a homeopathy of the soul, until all connection with the original point the artist wanted to make is gone.

Frankly, some of the most interesting stuff was in the giftshop. There's a good car museum close by, and there's better modern art in there. If you're openminded enough to considers cars art.

Though I respect your hatred of what you think modern art is you're still wrong.

Classical art actually took place during Roman times, there are modern movements that mimic the classical style however.

The painting you linked to is indeed modern art, it's from a style called impressionism. Not all modern art is hideous or '2deep4u', also the modern ended in the mid 40s. The art I think you hate would primary be called post-modern, and they still have painting but they're offensive to the eye of anyone with taste like pic related. There is also many other forms of art other than post modern which are equally hideous.

I think it's actually easier to evoke emotions with colors if you drop the conscious recognition of objects. Objects activate your verbal thoughts. You're beginning to put things into categories: that's a woman, that's a swan, that's sexual intercourse between the woman and the swan, that's being a fucking furry ... If you just have color and shape, the pathway is much more direct.

Usually not, I guess. Maybe that's why I like it - because it's a situation where i can feel free to be overcome by emotions.

He is over-relativizing. My main problem with modern art. Reducing art to "soundwaves" and "lightwaves" is the only way in which work like Rothko's would make sense, because they attempt the bare minimum at communication of ideas. And, I suppose, for that reason they could be interesting. But how many different dark squares do you have to paint before that interest wears of?

In a way, that's everything the abstract movement ever tried to do: Boil the nature of art down to as few moving parts as they possibly can. But they refuse to acknowledge they lose anything in the process, and so modern art is constantly circling the drain of the banal.

It's important that Rothko is superrealistic color. You won't wind this "wall of color" in nature. It's truly artistic: it's artificial. It's not a depiction of "orangeness". It IS orange.

> You won't wind this "wall of color" in nature. It's truly artistic: it's artificial.
How does that make it any different from the solid blue and white wall of my school, which I spent many a hours staring at it?
Does the hand of the artist painting a solid color, make it better than a worker doing the same?
The degree of craftsmanship won't help the thing convey any easier. In fact it makes it worse as the randomness of a worker's mistake add meaning.
And how does any of that make it convey anything?
The most I can see you convey with that is through symbolism and has nothing to do with the work of art it's self.

>Why make any distinction between them? Do you think a realistic piece does not convey impressions, emotions, and sensations?
Some certainly do. I'm not trying to put down old or naturalistic stuff, I can appreciate a lot of it. I think Bernini is great.

(This statue is of a rape. Why is it beautiful? Is rape beautiful?)

>Modern art forgot the purpose of the abstract
I'm pretty sure it came up with it in the first place?

>Rothko received (very indirectly) funding from the CIA. He didn't paint that shit cause he was trying to help capitalism though.
Funny enough I have friends who here hired third party through the CIA. They had them set up accounts that could be plausible deniability. Shady shit.

>Postmodern Degenerate Plebs like you should be castrated
When did I ever claim to like postmodernism ? It's my least favourite form of art, and when did I say I didn't like neoclassicism ? Granted, a lot of it reeks of pomposity & outright melodrama, but there's good stuff too, just not the 1930s & 1940s contemporary neoclassicism of Nazi Germany, where every painted fainting nude looked like a corpse made of polished white plastic.

> "the CIA fostered and promoted American Abstract Expressionist painting around the world for more than 20 years"

my point is, it wouldn't be as popular as it is now if it wasn't for the CIA, its forced art.

For one, they're not INTENSE. A Rothko is INTENSELY colorful.
They're also very deliberate. They carefully avoid too clear lines, edges, contours. They're just color.
>>
>>132862760
Everything I remember learning (limited albeit) about 30's and 40's art was shitty lines and modern crap.
>>
>>132862802
Probably.

Heidegger liked Hitler and cheated on his wife with a Jew, but his philosophy is interesting still.

>>132862813
Then the point needs to be made better, cause I'm not getting it.
>>
>>132862802
That's true, to an extent. The movement was already there, had been since the days of the interbellum. One of my favorite artists is a rebel against the abstract movement, and his classical works were already derided well before the CIA ever became a power.

His joke was that he made new paintings in the style of old masters, and presented them as such. Just as he predicted all experts loved his work when they thought it was someone else's.

Consider it an modern work of art.

>I think it's actually easier to evoke emotions with colors if you drop the conscious recognition of objects
A visceral experience, yes, for abstract art, better not to analyse it on an intellectual level, it annoys me when art critics with literary minds try & do this, I feel they may be missing the point somewhat.
>>
>>132862933
I just wonder, without anyone defending classical or realistic stuff, what makes you value "bold colors" so much? I just don't get it, and I'm not meaning to be rude in anyway. Why not bold colors in a painting with classical stuff? The blue in glass that is unreproducible perhaps but part of a larger whole? What is it that moves you about a single color?
t. serious
thanks

>For one, they're not INTENSE. A Rothko is INTENSELY colorful
That is irrelevant the intensity of colors in not necessary for conveying anything.
>They're also very deliberate. They carefully avoid too clear lines, edges, contours. They're just color.
So it actively tries to convey no emotion or meaning?

>trying to make it seem that all works are equal.
Well you're just strawmanning me now, I never said all music was equal & I never said all art was equal. Some people are tone deaf & perhaps others have the equivalent visually, if you see nothing whatsoever in Rothko then that probably says more about how your brain is wired up in the visual cortex region rather than anything to do with the paintings themselves.

I agree most modern art (post-modern, really is what we're talking about here ITT) is absolute bullshit. Still, if you look, you can find "real art" being done today. I'll post a few examples.

Mohammed himself disregarded all the things and he was the ultimate idol of islam that everyone has to obey.

Also only if he gives the command a single time doestn mean anything.

>Dont kill that child that is running away because we killed her whole family while we enforced islam and let the survivors starve in cages!
>I have to rape her first!
>Now you must kill her!

wow, muhammed is really a good guy.

Not always the case, there's lots out there if you look for it, if you're talking about realism, that's what I'm guessing you mean by 'better drawn pictures'.
