There's been a lot of numbers thrown around.
It's nothing really related to the ideas of communism, but the biggest two objections are the gulags, which was essentially the prison system adopted from the old imperialist system and eventually done away with and the two years of starvation. Granted the two years were awful. I don't know how a drought itself can be Stalin's fault, but the fact is that the state decided that they needed to industrialize as fast as possible to defend themselves, so they imported from Ukraine, which is where the genocide accusations come from. It was a pretty messy feudal situation with political resistance and after collectivization of the farms and industrialization were set into place, you didn't have the same famines every 2-3 years, so maybe it's more accurate to say that while it's brutal in retrospect, maybe it actually saved lives in the long run. Food was eventually imported to help the starving. It's a pretty bad situation, but communism doesn't necessarily lead to it, it was just Stalin's shift from feudalism to full blown socialism, which was a pretty messy process. Agree with it or not.

back in the summer of 72' i learned communists make excellent compost.

I had no idea if anyone had called the police in the ensuing panic yet, so i rightfully decided to book it. as i was running to the back of my car to try and reaffix the license plate in case any potential cops on the way home took notice, i thought to myself, "i can't walk away from something this big without some kind of souvenir." At first i thought id take one of their signs, but that would be too big to hide. Then i saw it: a severed hand, torn straight from the arm of some red cunt. At this point, i decided i'd do something interesting with it. You see, i had a small chili plant i kept on my windowsill that i felt hadn't received any type of nutrition for a long time, and seeing how worthless communists inherently are, i decided it was time that one of them was given a purpose in life. I wrapped the hand in some tissues, and when i got home, i lifted the pepper with all the dirt out of the pot and placed the hand at the bottom. to this day, those are the damn best tasting peppers ive ever had.

That isn't always possible. Maybe in America you can get away with striving, but what do you do if you're essentially stuck in wage slavery feudalism? What happens if you're in the Sahara and a drought destroys all your resources? What happens if you go blind and your neighbors hate you because of a false rumor spread around your community? The cold fact of capitalism is that people get left behind despite their best efforts to live. In capitalism, you have to say "fuck it" and let a certain amount of people die to maintain free market values and keep things in the black. If you're okay with that social darwinism, I can't say much to that, but I feel like since we have the means to meet everyone'd needs, we should have a safety net for those that fall into the gears of circumstance. We can do it. Or we can make a profit.

Yes, that's the point of a controlled economy. Hopefully a democratic agency. Hopefully a democratic agency with a vanguard to prevent the take over that happened at the end of the Soviet Union.

The point is to eventually move beyond that when society hits a post-scarcity surplus. Not that you can really be post-scarcity, but surplus enough where that if a good chunk of the workers drop out to start ComTube channels or experiment with cat communications, it won't collapse the system. It seems Utopian, but with the inevitable automation, production seems set to explode.
