Eveyone else was bombed. In the Midwest alone we made 6 blast furnaces in the 40s that would take 15 years of red tape today (and a few DNC donations to speed permiting for the ones in Chicago). We rebuilt everything for everyone. Then as everyone else caught up we made less and less because of competition.

You graduated high school and started life. Your job would let you pay for a house you own, two cars in the driveway, and your wife could be a stay at home mom. You still had money leftover to be comfortable.

It wasn't perfect. And those that came after it had legit complaints about the culture and the conformity of the time. That being said, it was nonetheless a time of growth, prosperity and stability. A time far more easy and rightfully nostalgic to look back upon compared to the poverty and war-stricken '30s and '40s, and the chaos of the '60s.

Jim Crow only affected a group that was about 10% of the population, and only in the south where it was in effect. Blacks still made something of themselves, nonetheless.

Well, for one thing, the black murder rate was lower back then. So was the incarceration rate. The marriage rate was a lot higher, as was the employment rate.

"Jim Crow laws" didn't even exist in a lot of states back then anyway. And they were mainly defensive in nature rather than offensive - ie, they were designed to protect white communities in mixed areas from black crime, not to make things tougher on black communities themselves. That was the only realistic way that blacks and whites could peacefully co-exist in many places.

One of the things I hate about historical revisionists is their lazy willingness to believe that people in the past must have done things because they were mean/evil/irrationally-prejudiced/etc. Why not look at their ACTUAL motivations as they themselves described things?

A lot of black people in the 70's and 80's had nostalgia for the 1950's, too. Mississippi used to have a whole small industry of high-school reunions where black people who had moved to Chicago or other northern cities would take the train back down and remember the old days.

Day-to-day life for most people in "Jim Crow" country was perfectly normal. A lot of the jokes in a show like "Amos and Andy" came from the characters reminiscing about the slower simple life back down south, as opposed to the big northern city.
