(TORONTO) — The Trudeau government has quietly paid a $10.5-million settlement to Omar Khadr in a move that circumvents legal efforts by two Americans to prevent him from receiving compensation for abuses he suffered as a teenager at the U.S. military detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
The Canadian-born Khadr was captured by U.S. troops after he murdered American special forces medic Christopher Speer.
"On behalf of the government of Canada, we wish to apologize to Mr. Khadr for any role Canadian officials may have played in relation to his ordeal abroad and any resulting harm," said a statement from Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale and Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland.
