Slavery, and a litany of other things, were the causes of secession. Secession was the cause of the war. The north fought to preserve the Union, the South fought for independence. Slavery became an emotional rallying cry for the North.

The southern secession was for state rights. The constitution says that no state is allowed to secede from the union. Lincoln, knowing how important slaves were to the southern economy, signed the emancipation proclamation to make the south mad. Lincoln made the war about slavery not the south.

Correct. The population growth of the antebellum USA and rising abolitionist sentiment meant more free states would be incorporated until slave states became such a minority that slavery could be abolished through a constitutional amendment. Realizing that they would have their way of life taken from them through the vote, most slave states seceded in order to preserve their economies and way of life.

Ironically, they pretty much hastened the end of slavery, With the Confederacy no longer being part of Congress, abolitionism was able to pass the 13th amendment in Congress. When the South was defeated and forced to rejoin the union, their terms of surrender meant they could do little to stop the Amendment's ratification. If they hasn't seceded, slavery could have very well existed in the U.S. for several more decades.

Abraham Lincoln won the election without even appearing on the ballot in the southern states. At the time he was the first anti-slavery president who seemed liked he was actually willing to do something about it. The south succeeded from the union, then the war began.
