They were like 13 at the end of the war, they just said how they thought the planes flying over looked cool and how they sometimes stole ammunition from the Germans and they'd get a comically angry German after them.
Rural area, so we didn't have any Jews here that were missing nor any problem with food shortages, basically very little 'war' happened.
>>
both were too young for ww2, both also killed gooks in Korea though.

Mother's side had one brother KIA, the other two who served died in 46' after driving drunk and wrapping their car around a pole.

One Served in the Luftwaffa, 4 Great Uncles served. 1 in the SS the other 3 in the Wermacht though possibly support roles. Unfortunately my Great Grandmother was the last link to that generation and she didn't like talking about it much. I could tell she loved Hitler.

She and her mother and sisters spent years housing Russian Soldiers and had disclosed previously the atrocities she suffered because of that.. I do often question my lineage because of it, but my Opa was born during the war supposedly, before occupation.

My Great-Grandpa fought as a marine in the Pacific theater, I'm not certain, but I remember hearing about how he was part of an absurdly bloody battle, as in >90% of people killed kind of thing.

By the time I was born it was such a long time ago and he was in his late 90s so I didn't really know him very well. I've met other's who fought in the war that are marginally less senile, but it isn't the kind of thing they like to talk about.

Grandpa grew up under german occupation.
The winter in 44-45 was the hunger winter and most people suffered during it. He told me they took wood from between the trams and train tracks to burn for heat and they ate tulips because there wasnt allot of food.

His father was arrested for stealing potatoes from the countryside and the germans made him cut and clean the potatoes and they took his bicycle and then they let him go.
Bicycles where very expensie back then It was the worth of a car back then.

My grandmothers family ran a black market for supplies and they made their own alchohol.

My other grandmothers family smuggled potatoes.

My other grandfather illegally butchered a cow and he with some other where supplying all the people in the town with some extra meat.
And the germans told him to stop but he ran away and they shot him in the leg. The bullet went throug his leg and shot through his wooden shoe and that split in half.
To his dying day he was mad at the germans for destroying his wooden shoe (clogs)

Fighter Pilot in the Royal Air Force.
Hurricane and Spitfire.
Shot down a few Nazi aircrafts.
Also survived a good number of emergency landings /crashes.

Also, Opa was quadrilingual, could speak fluently in English, French, German and Russian. They sent him to Berlin after the war.
Special ops shit.

Sadly, he died in a car crash, after all of this, and I never knew him.
My father said that he didn't speak about what he did in Berlin since it was confidential shit.
But what he did tell my father are the operations that were canceled. Like selecting a few inmates/criminals to do some dirty job for them.

Dad also said how he came back from Berlin with additional scars. Not scars from airplane, scars from bullets and/or knife.

Never knew him, but I still look up to him

My grandpa was an Army infantryman in New Westminster, British Columbia and served the duration in Canada because of dental issues that barred him from overseas service.

He was a communist and a teamsters after the fact that literally prevented my family from becoming millionaires due to his stupid fucking principles. My grandmother had a degree in economics. A mill up the street from their house was for sale and she wanted to by it. She would manage the finances, like she did at her day job and my grandfather would manage the men. He declined, preferring to be an alcoholic truck driver instead. The property that the mill was on is now a strip mall that would have generated several hundred thousand dollars from the land sale. Adjusted for inflation, my grandmother would have died a multimillionaire and the inheritance would have been passed on to us. Instead, she managed to put away $280,000 by investing wisely and being frugal. She didn't earn very much and didn't have an employee pension, so that's actually pretty good all things considered.

My grandfather was an abusive, drunken, idiot. My grandma was great though. I love her very much.

My mother in law had a German father, straight from the Fatherland. He immigrated before the war, but kept in touch with family. There was a photo that my mother in law wanted me to look at. She wanted to know what regiment he served in... Family legend was that her uncles were conscripts that were forced to fight and didn't like the Nazis. I figured I could take a look at the uniform and do some research and figure out what division he was in at the very least. I didn't have to look into it very far. When she showed me the photograph it was dated 1933 and he was a legitimate brown shirt, a Nazi stormtrooper. So, right there I debated with myself whether or not I should tell her the truth... I turned to her and said.

"He's not a Nazi."

My mother in law breathed a huge sigh of relief.

"Nah, he's a super mega hyper fucking Nazi. He's the kind of Nazi that other Nazis would take a look at and say 'Wow, what a fucking Nazi.' He was such a Nazi that he probably thought Hitler didn't go far enough. He's such a big huge fucking Nazi tha-"

And she left the room with tears in her eyes. I thought it was really funny at the time and I still do. There's no fucking way you can look at that picture and the date and say "That dude didn't even like Nazis. They forced him into it!"

It's delusional and tens of millions of Germans are doing it to this day. Accept your history. Your grandparents and parents were fucking Nazis. Nothing wrong with it. The war ended 72 years ago.

I'm German and Palestinian

My German grandfather did clerical work for the SS in Poland since he had a bum leg , or so I'm told. My grandmother worked in a factory instead of manning spot lights like they originally wanted her to do. I don't know a lot since they refuse to tell me, but I do know that my grandma was the only survivor from a air strafe attack on a train she was riding, and my grandparents were in Haigerloch (where the Germans were building their nuke) on honeymoon when the Allies broke into the town in 1945. I also had a lot of great uncles who died in stalingrad, and one was a pilot who was shot down in Greece.

My Palestinian grandfather was an illiterate British soldier and an Arab revolutionary. He was one of the best arms smugglers in the entirety of Palestine because the Brits left him in charge of the armory in Hebron, where he stole most of the arms that he gave to the resistance. My grandfather evaded being round up by the brits by hiding in a dry well for 16 days while people in his village brought him food and water until the heat was off. He only emerged from hiding when he heard that children in his neighborhood were denied water from a well HE HIMSELF built by the british soldiers because they knew they were helping him somehow. My grandfather went up to the two soldiers guarding the well with his face covered, pretending to ask for water and then he beat them both to death with a pipe wrench.

My great grandfather has a neat history too. He killed 7 Ottoman soldiers for gang raping his niece while her father was away on business. once the ottomans at an outpost found out, they found my great grandfather and tortured him until he was nearly dead, they even lit and put out all the cigarettes they had on his back. after that they conscripted him, his brother and his best friend into the army. While on the way to Ankara, his convoy was raided and he had to shoot his way out. His best friend caught a bullet in his leg and wouldnt stop screaming. my grandfather tried making him stop but the pain was so excruciating. Knowing he couldn't help, and that his best friend screaming was gonna get his position compromised, he killed his best friend. Not soon after he left the convoy and headed back down south to Palestine on foot from turkey. He never saw his brother again either.

Grandpa' was in the Wehrmacht, actual German, joined because of the miltiary because of the crisis at the time (that and 3 meals a day and shit like clothes and dental care) he was sent to Poland to pass every waking day to remove pols and lately warsaw who was ordered to be leveled by Hendrich, He lost his familly by "glorious and needed" almost permanent phosphorus bombing on Berlin and went half mad for that and having to kill civilians each fucking day, He fucked off to France by passing by the Danemark, The Netherlands, and Belgium (since no relatives left to be send to forced work camp or simple hanging) joined the French résistance and removed some gestapo and snitch (the one that snitch the said résistance) alike, maried my grandma' who was some hard ass resistance bitch, but he got caught by said Gestapo who tortured him to death on a public place for example 1 week after the making of my mother, he didn't said shit tho and for that he received Honor Legion medal from France, my grandma too but because she was a doc and hided Brits pilots at the start of the war in her ceiling and Germans soldiers in her basment at the end, she was harsh but just and no one talked shit to her, she was the daughter of a local blue blood who got killed in 1917 and since the manor was around Verdun she was sent to the nuns whe she was 6 (from top aristocratie to the nuns, wonder why she was an hard ass...)

It's still hard for me due to my political view to "judge" what he did, was it wrong ? right ? which side would i would chosen if at the time i was put in his shoes ?

He was an artillery air observer.

He flew around in the back of a reconnaissance plane made out of canvas and wood called a piper cub (pic related), spotted the enemy and crunched the numbers to tell the artillery where to aim.

In the Korean war he commanded an artillery company after that he went to the war college switched over to armor and commanded an armored regiment on the border between east and west Germany. Then he got assigned to the Pentagon which he thought was boring and a dead end for his career so he retired early as a full Colonel.

My great grandfather served at the Somme as well. He was a Lt. Colonel of the Regina Rifles regiment. He got machine gunned by the Krauts while he was observing a working party that was fortifying the trench works in a British part of the line. The soldiers present were supposed to provide security, but fell asleep.

After that he recovered in France before going home. He spent the rest of the war training his battalions replacements and developing tactics with notable folks like the Buster Brothers, one of which developed the Canadian invasion plan of the United States.

After the war, he went back to work as a lumber mill manager and raised his two little girls until he had to take a job in San Francisco in the 20s, where he died due to complications from his injuries. I had absolutely no idea that my great grandfather had two daughters. Growing up, it was just my grandma. Turns out her sister died long before my dad was born.

I take a great deal of interest in my great grandfather. He was born exactly 100 years before me in 1885, so I try to imagine what he was doing with his life, at the same age as me. His first daughter, my grandmother, was born 99 years before my daughter. One hundred years ago, he was recovering in a French hospital, missing his little girls, figuring out ways to get back at the Hun... And I'm here shit posting with you lads, wondering if we will ever have to fight another world war.

We still have his cane. I pray I never have to use it myself.

To add onto this, My grandfather was shot down twice during the war and barely survived either crash. My family actually received two death notices because the medics declared him dead both times. He survived the first time because after he woke up in the morgue he kept groaning and the doc came over and had the medics fix him up. The second time he was found with the wreckage of his b-17 and he has been able to survive the crash in the belly gunner cage(b-17 belly gunners had no access port to the rest of the plane so if you got shot down it would be a miracle you survived) and afterwards a salvage team found his body and saw he had a blood bubble bursting from his mouth as his was attempting to breath so they brought him back to base a resuscitated him. Later on in his life we got another death notice because he built his pool in Spring valley, San Diego underneath a power line. It was clearly against code but he didn't give 2 shits. One day as he was cleaning it, he hit the power line with the pool net and received a shit ton of volts into his body and my dad recalls seeing him fly over the backyard fence which was about 6-7 feet tall. He survived that though. Sadly he eventually died from cancer caused by exposure to the asbestos lining of his naval air force bomber jacket. Pic related is him with his car prewar(he worked with my great-grandfather for general motors for maybe 5 years while my great-grandfather worked there for around 30).

>grandpa smuggled secret letters to the resistance against the invading Germcucks
>other grandpa participated int the rebuilding of Europe after the war, he was too young to do much during the war, basically spent the 5 years looking for food and trying not to starve

An interesting story is when my grandpa smuggled letters into a cabin deep in the forest, where the resistance was hiding from the Germcucks. He managed to get trough every Germcuck-checkpoint by placing the letters at the bottom of the backpack. Then placing my then toddler uncle in the backpack with his head sticking out, so he sat on the backpack. Hiking is very common in Norway, so when he got to the checkpoints he just told them he was going for a hike, and when they searched him they found nothing.

Another story is when my aunt, who was 6 years old was on the bus, and a Germcuck gave her and her friend a piece of candy. They both started to cry because they thought it was candy, and quickly threw into the river.

At the start of the war he and a couple of others from his village were called to join the croatian home guard. Later they deserted and went into hiding. In 1943 they were captured by partisans and were sent to sutjeska (a river at which a great battle was raging, him and his friends were sent there without guns mind you) on they're way there they were captured by the croatian home guard and were sent to a POW camp. There he got sick and was transported to a hospital in sisak. After he was healed he was transported back to his village and captured again by partisans. Then he worked as a cook for the pastisans. So one day one partisan officer didn't want to eat a soup he cooked for him so the officer sent him to ''prja'' (a beach in the village) with three grenades to catch him some fish. two of the grenades worked and the third one blew half of his arm off. After that some englishmen found him and took him to italy to a hospital (he said that they helped him because he had a pretty sister) and stayed there to the end of the war.

My grandfather fought in the Battle of Anzio, and was wounded in the face, but got bandaged up and continued his fight. eventually he fell in love with an Italian broad (told me on his deathbed about her), and may have fathered a child there. Came home and married my Grandma. He enlisted by lying about his age (a lot of his friends also did so), but after the Japanese bombed pearl harbor, and hearing tidbits about what was happening in Germany to Jews (he was a jew) , he had to enlist. He straightened my ass out when I was a good for nothing bitch of a teen. Best man I have ever known and I miss him a lot. Should have asked more about his time in Italy, but I didn't and I regret it. He refused to talk about details, unlike my father who would tell me all the details about his time in war. Killing nazis is a blessing. Today, we only get to kill Muslims, which is more like pest control than a battle for the free world. Hopefully Germany becomes fascist again so I can follow in my Grandpas footsteps. Truly no worse nation to ever exist producing the worst type of people. Krauts are disgusting.

My grandpappy killed Albanians and Italian fascists during ww2 camapaigns in the balkans, at the end of the war they were promised reinforcements from the British to fight the Partisans but the brits double crossed them, disarmed them at the Austrian Border and sent them on the march of death back home where they were captured an executed by the Commies, grandpappy somehow escaped and blended in with the refugees by faking sick and was taken to a camp in Kosovo where he was then able to escape to Greece. All of his cousins died and his one brother who lived was held in Austrian prison till the end of the war, was released, then killed by the commies 20 years later while on his moped. Partisan Commie Death Squads were a thing back then.
>>
He was in the Yugoslavian army. He doesn't like to talk about the war. All I know is a lot of his friends died and he fled the country to avoid execution.

One welded navy ships. He was one of like 3 guys at the shipyards who could pass the microscopic weld tests every single time.

The other ... I'll have to ask my father. Pretty sure he was active in the Pacific theatre but not 100%. I know my uncles were in the Vietnam and Korean wars.

The story my grandma told me about her father and my great grandpa. He enlists in Croatian Home Guard during wolrd war 2, one night he decides to desert his post in osijek(he was a lookout) and goes home back to podravina.

That same night the partisani surprised attacked the city and because my great grandpa deserted nobody knew the attack was happening. The nazis managed to defend the city and repel the attack against the partizani. Than they sent gestapo to my great grandpa home in podravina to arrest him.

They arrest him, send him to court in Osijek, they sentenced him to death by firing squad and bury him in some ditch in Osijek. My great grandma becomes single mother with my grandma and after war was over, she paid for the locals in osijek to return the corpse of my great granpa back to podravina.

Opa fought in the eastern front almost fully as a Scout mostly behind enemy lines. Lost one of his brothers there. He told some stories of the battles and war but he didnt really want to speak about it which is a shame. In 1944 he got shot in the leg at the Tisza so he was sent back to germany for healing thats how I guess he missed the end of the war and survived.

My grandpa was born in February 1945 in Dresden. His parents were shot by a Canadian soldier, and he was later adopted by a Canadian soldier and brought to Canada.

I have always had a suspicion that my grandpa's adoptive father killed his real father. His adoptive father served the Allies and was in Dresden throughout 1945.

It really tears me up inside.

Yeeha, might be my first trips! I actually maintained Bren's (and hundreds of other types) working in the armory for the comfors/opfors weapons familiarization classes at Camp Pendleton in '66&'67.
My personal favorite, an MG42 "free gun", mounted on a tripod without the T&E mechanism.

Whoa! Double checked!!
The Bren was the empires .303 calibre squad automatic weapon, comparable in deployment and effectiveness to our BAR. Excellent light machine guns, because of their magazine being inserted above the line of the bore, they allowed you to get lower, under the line of return fire.
Downside was, they blocked you field of view, gave your position away and if the magazine was hit, you got a face full of nasty shrapnel. Great shooting guns, none the less.
