Some places in the world have kept very good records. For example in Quebec every birth and death was recorded by the church ever since the French set up their colonies on the continent. I can trace my ancestry all the way to about 1600 with a few holes here and there.

How do you even begin to organise a family tree when it gets that large?

Yeah, about 250 years, though I traced my direct paternal line to about 400 years ago. Through a few lines however I was able to find ancestors from the early middle ages

What to do then? My aunt is staunch that we have Jew and Slavic in our family but I'm really unsure if that's the case since most of the tree I can find goes back to Dutchland or from Native American roots at the very most fringe. Our last name has been Stadig for so many generations.
