Russians

With the decline of the Ottoman Empire in the Balkans, the Austro-Hungarian Empire was gaining a lot of power and influence, but the Russians wanted this for themselves (had to do with gaining trading opportunities in the Black Sea). This is why Russia left the Three Empire Alliance of which Austria-Hungary was a part, and aligned themselves with France and England.

However, this shifted the balance of power heavily, which was something the German Empire had been working hard to maintain, to prevent major wars within continental Europe. This is why they ended up allying Italy, they wanted to regain some security against possible aggression from other European powers.

Then the Russians started backing anti Austrian revolutionaries in Serbia and coaxed them into attacking the Austrians, with the intent of decreasing Austrian influence in the area. Realizing this, the Germans and Austrians acted quickly and World War 1 broke out.

During this war, Jewish Communist took advantage of the weakness in the Empires and staged Revolutions on both sides, destroying Germany and Austria and leading to the terrible Treaty of Versailles.


All of this laid the groundwork for World War 2, which really was an attempt for the Germans to regain their status as a major power.

It was a build-up, rather than one-sided.

Ethnic german persecution in neighbouring nations put pressure on Germany to react. This lead to the invasion of Poland by both Germany and the Soviet Union per the NA pact. Britain goes to war with Germany, but fails to engage the Soviet Union.

Later on, the Soviet Union begins amassing armies on their western border. These armies were meant to take part in 'Soviet deep battle', generally known as shock armies. Germany preemptively attacked these armies, largely defenseless and incapable of operating due to logistical shortcomings. The immediate invasion was decisive, but was ultimately a failure.

You can blame either side. Germany for their invade and annexing? Neighboring nations for providing Germany a reason for the invasions? Britain for ultimately declaring the war on Germany (and not the Soviet Union) due to the invasion of Poland.
