It was less than that. The July elections had the NSDAP close to 40% but it was down to around 33% in November if I remember right. Hitler was very lucky Hindenburg finally caved and appointed him Chancellor even though Hindenburg despised him. The 43% came from the March elections where even with full scale SA terrorism and the Reichstag fire he couldn't get a majority. He actually had to form a coalition government and then ban the communist party to get stuff done. Hitler could have gotten appointed with less seats since it was the President's job appoint the Chancellor and he usually appointed the ruling party or coalitions choice. But desu I'm sick of the "evil Germans all elected Hitler because they all hated joos" meme when that's not true and the left's attempts to make parallels with Trump.
