It doesn't make so much sense now because consecutive governments have pissed all over the constitution, taking power away from the states and trying to morph it into one big country with a single centralised government - that shit never works without turning authoritarian like USSR, China, India. The idea is to have the people from Idaho governing themselves, while the people of Georgia govern Georgia. It's retarded to have someone in California voting on an issue that will have an effect on education in Florida.
