But people often don't think of Russia as an empire because of it being on one landmass which is pretty weird when you think about it. Part of the reason might be its history as a communist nation.

Communists are really into cosplaying as anti-colonial which means their own psuedo-colonial/generally imperialist activities often go under the radar, Tibet and Hong Kong are good examples of this.
