Britain was very a very special country in terms of location, climate and resources.

It is an island large enough to be a real country but small enough that it can be controlled by a single nation. It is also far enough away from the mainland to protect it from invasion but close enough to still trade.

Despite being far north it has a very mild climate due to the gulf stream. England also has large amounts of fertile farm land. This means it can support a large population comfortably.

It is resource rich in water, rivers suitable for water power, coal and iron. This allowed Britain to develop massive industries and productive power.

These three factors combined made Britain the first true superpower. No nation has ever had the influence of the British Empire at its prime. Without these factors Britain would probably be very similar to Japan and some other European nation would be the major cultural force. (probably France).

The British Empire peaked in 1922 over a hundred years after the American Colonies rebelled. Really there were two British Empires (very similar to Rome). The larger one was the 2nd Empire which focused on ruling non-British colonial subjects rather than exporting British citizens to other nations. This is also why the British Empire died so quickly because the subject populations held no real loyalty to the British people, once the threat of force (or bribes) were gone they broke away.
