Should USA give Japan a nuke deal?

If Japan wanted nuclear weapons, they could build their own in weeks.

Japan doesn't want one. Every time Article 9 is mentioned of being so much as adjusted, everyone rails against that.

Implying we don't already have our own infrastructure already there, we rebuilt their whole country, you know there are some Minutemen tubes or something there from the last 60 years hiding in the hills. Wich I respect the Nips endlessly for. It turns out a country can't grow up until it is nuked. Maybe the US is letting the gooks go so far with their nuclear program as a sort of vaccine, a weakened version of a nuke so they don't have to actually suffer threw a REAL nuclear exchange.

Oh and as for "well what's stopping anyone from attacking them" if that isn't obvious, it's because Japan also serves as one of the most heavily-fortified US military garrisons in the world, it was our headquarters during the Korean War.

Two things:

1. Nukes are only really useful for one thing: Deterrence Umbrellas. Country A has nukes so that if Country B nukes Country A or any of Country A's allies, Country A nukes Country B back. Mutually Assured Destruction, end result is nukes are never used and conflicts between certain countries or power blocs never pass a certain point. Japan already is under a nuclear umbrella, the United States'. Having nukes in Japan wouldn't factor into MAD at all, and arguably make the situation worse because now China wouldn't just have Japanese population centers as targets, but nuke silos as well. Just look at the map of the Midwest in a hypothetical WW3 scenario. Empty patches of land get nuked because there are silos there. Would not be good for Japan if they had the same situation.

2.What Japan needs is an offensive military. Their current 'self defense force' is entirely reliant on the US in a conventional war, and has to abuse all sorts of stupid loopholes in order to meet their strategic needs. Like for example, they're not allowed to get aircraft carriers, so they build 'helicopter carriers' that could be repurposed to service aircraft in a pinch. Not many aircraft, but in a pinch it's an escort carrier. Add to this that they cannot have strategic bombers, landing craft for tanks, or a military fleet worth a damn at all. This is the real problem. That Japan is hypocritical and constrained by the idea it is both being punished for what happened in the 1940's and is some sort of pacifist nation that doesn't fight wars anymore. Neither is true.

The true path to independence from the US is a conventional army, not nuclear capabilities. The idea the US would stop protecting Japan with its nuclear umbrella is foolish.

Fuck I hope not. They are one of the few states that actually pay more into the federal government than they receive, have tons of tech jobs, and has some of the most productive farm land in the USA (especially so once the orgullo aquifer gets sucked dry by the morons who live above it).
