GEB is pretty good, but it's like 'Infinite Jest
in the way people like to talk about it without actually finishing it.

Hofstadter's other works are pretty good. 'I am a strange loop' is a little more to the point about nothing->complexity->consciousness. 'Metamagical Themas' is also pretty good - a collection of shorter works.

Also look into Roger Penrose's books/lectures if you're into the more abstract bits of spacetime.
