I keep seeing this "argument" and it frustrates me because the people repeating it make life sound so fucking simple, when it's not. There are so many factors to be considered.

Even if everyone agrees that "people should be held accountable for the things they do", that doesn't absolve you of answering some important follow-up questions. Held accountable by who? Held accountable in what way?

There's a difference between personal accountability for dissemination of content and coercion based on the ideological context of said content.

CNN would have been legally justified in posting the name of the poster. If they act as a relatively impartial medium for which he's associated with his own posts that's fine.

Instead Kaczinsky made the suggestion that CNN withheld his personal information as a result of his remorse over the content of his posts. Furthermore they suggested that they might release damaging information if the poster's behavior in the future deviated.

CNN doesn't have the right to attempt to modify an individual's behavior by reserving the right to identify them later. This reeks of coercion and suggests CNN is acting as an arbiter of discipline.

I have no illusions that CNN was involved as an organization here. Kaczinsky used his position as an agent of CNN to dispense his own brand of Justice.

That being said, the language of his article suggested that CNN withheld information based of the poster's repentance and clearly suggested that the poster's information may be published later if he goes back to his former behavior.

Private institutions don't get to hand out disciplinary consequences to private individuals if they behave a certain way. The language involved here is reminiscent of how predators coerce children online and in terms of power differentials, this is a fairly good analogy.

The language and threat of disciplinary action is there. If the poster felt that his ability to make posts of a certain nature was limited due to the possibility that CNN might reveal his identity, coercion would have occurred.
