I think the reason atheists become so militant is partly because with even a single religion left in the world it would cause another rift (via textual interpretations etc) that doom generations of mankind to yet more bizarre posturing to supernatural forces for the sake of appeasement. I take it you don't have many discussions with religious people. I find that most religious people are happy to engage in debate. The problem is most atheists have no knowledge of religion and just attack religious people for simply believing. My wife is religious and always willing to engage me in debate. The two of us have learned a lot from each other but neither of us has abandoned our beliefs. I'm not a militant atheist and she's not a militant Christian so both of us actually make an attempt to understand the other's viewpoint.

For example, one discussion we had recently, I said "If proof denies faith, and faith is required to get in to heaven, then wouldn't Jesus Christ, who had proof of god's existence be denied entrance to heaven?"

Compare that all the other atheists you see who just do shit like spout "God isn't real!" and then cry that religious people aren't accepting their introduction of evidence and reason.

Look at the language they're using, "Devout Atheist", "Trust in Science", "Atheism Evangelist". Atheists claim to not be religious but yet they parody Christianity in particular's language and end up LARPing a little too hard and end up treating Atheism and "Science" as things that cannot be argued with, doing so would be the same as going against the Catholic church openly during the Renaissance.
The comic is pointing out the double-think common among atheists. It has nothing to do with politics except for the fact the types of people you see on the left of the comic you can almost guarantee would be liberals if you met them in real life.
