When I was at school as a kid I picked German because I found it the easiest language by far. Much easier than French.
Which makes sense because English is a Germanic language. So lots of the words and grammar is strongly similar (not the same of course but similar).

I would choose something obscure. I'd probably go with latin. So I can read old books in their original languages.
