Identity politics is a game you have to play if you want to survive as a group. Nations are political entities based on identity. It's not a "modern cancer" at all, it's the alternative to (and in this situation possibly the precursor to) racial war. When you have two "tribes" living in the same territory there will ve conflict over that territory. Assimilation is undesirable because people don't generally want to gone up their cultural and racial identity for purely economic reasons. The ones who do are of low spiritual quality.
