No, having a dog is key in a family. You should get a dog that should live until your child turns about 10-12. It's death will provide a life lesson for them.
I was 11 when my shepherd died and I learned about death (not just shit you heard on the news, actually being there, watching life leave and see their eyes glass).
Not to mention having a good dog will always be a positive aspect in home defense, unless you're getting raided by some alphabet soup agency, namely the ATF
